monster design contest, spriting of entries has started

Postby raymoohawk » Tue Oct 28, 2014 7:35 pm

Next semester is going to be my last in college, as part of one of the classes I plan on starting a YouTube channel about doom style spriting. I will have a tutorial video series detailing and commenting the creation of a complete sprite sheet from scratch. Unfortunately having played few games I don’t have many referents to fuel my creativity.

Here is where you my fellow zdoomers can help! I am launching a monster design contest, submit a design of your own creation in the form of a sketch or detailed description, don’t hold back if you have a beastie that you always wanted to see in doom!

I will turn the winning design into a complete sprite sheet, with everything included, projectiles, xdeaths, brightmaps (NOTE I will not code or create any sounds, just images) and feature it in the video series, you will of course be credited with the monster design, you will also decide under which license to release the sheet

The submissions will be open until December, however since I don’t want to hurt my responsibilities towards freedoom the actual spriting will start on February when classes start.

Don’t worry this project will definitely be finished, I’ve already spoken to the teacher for whose class this project will be, so don’t hesitate, if raymoo fails you raymoo fails school, so no risk of sudden cancelation!

The selection of the best design will be done by vote, so no bias.

Rules coming soon (feel free to suggest some) :D

also someone help come up with a more appropriate title for the thread

i will mirror this thread over at doomworld so they can participate too

feel free to ask questions if you have doubts

for now the only rules are no ghost or smoke like monsters, unless they include solid parts as the maority. also no zombies

UPDATE

i have started spriting the entries for the contest. i have started with capj, i have taken liberties in the design to make it more doom friendly (vertical desings avoid sprite going trough walls)

Image

so some good news and bad ones

first the good, all the entries will get one whole rotation sprited. this will be done because a monsters design can change widely from a single 2d representation to a a 3d rotation. a single sprite would be misleading

the bad, the project will continue at an even slower pace than it has so far. in part because of my many compromises. also no more submissions. all the ones already submitted will be sprited, but if someone submitted many they will be combined to reduce number of submissions, the same applies to desings with similarities

expect more soon, and im really sorry for being so of schedule

UPDATE

Heh, I'd certainly love to have you make a spriteset for me, but unfortunately all the stuff I'd want is based on existing monsters, rather than original creations. Dammit.

Well, i think i can give myself a try. Here's my oldest work of my monster designs, they were called the warmongers. Just pick once what you want to redesign, or few of 'em.

Feed me concepts, Yholl. Things might happen.
There's always a chance that an idea of yours might turn into something more original than intended.

i like them! very quake2ish, but im not going to choose the design, theres going to be a voting (of course i can still give this a try even if its not chosen for this project)

EDIT

for now the only rule is that the monsters cant be smoke monsters or transparent ghosts unless they also include solid parts

here's a example about overlord gunship's look; http://i.imgur.com/XowCREe.png

just make sure pick only once or few of 'em, i don't want to force you to make all of 'em.

Concepts eh? Hmmmm.

- A muscly demon with only a mouth for a face that runs around on all fours, with a cybernetic spine that runs from its head to its butt. It's got a heat sensor connected to the head end above its mouth, and on the top of his back, he's got a small multi-barrelled battleship-style cannon.

- A large cyberdemon-style demon with completely artificial legs from the waist down. The backs of the legs have caterpillar treads on them and can transform into full tank treads for rapid attack. He has a bunch of wires that go from a reactor on his back into a spherical power crystal of some sort that fires beams embedded in his chest.

- A demon made of sharp, angular bone-like grey bodyparts (kinda Iron Lich inspired), connected with a nebulous body of pure dark static. Head, hands, feet, torso, with the rest of his vaguely humanoid bodyshape just a constantly distorting static shape. Can fling his parts to rapidly move from place to place, with the static disolving and then reforming when he stops.

- A spikey, ball-shaped, one-eyed demon with six arms that it uses to rip apart enemies in close combat.

Can't really think of any other ideas off the top of my head.

a little note, because the video series that will showcase the creation of the monster is meant to help those who are interested in doom style sprting, it is recommended (but not obligatory) to keep the size of the monster within the original doom range. also nice concepts guys! keep coming up with wacky stuff

a little update, althoug only the winning design will be fully sprited, i will create single frames of the runner ups, and maybe a full rotation for second and third place

also if someone has an idea to simplify the voting process suggest, i was planning just voting in a reply, but is there a better way?
