[Sprites] Delta Force Weapons (kind of)

Now, here's a funny thing. I was looking along my games shelf when I spotted an old copy of "Delta Force - Land Warrior". Not a great game (IMO) but I decided to install it anyway. I started playing and noticed something odd: despite the game being a 3D model game, the HUD weapons seemed to be sprites. Some (all?) of them even seemed to be model grabs being used as sprites!

Anyway, I quit and decided to see if I could rip anything from the game. Turns out that I could. So, the linked file is just a very quick look through of the pictures that I managed to extract where I selected the stuff that seems to be related to weapons. I may have missed some stuff, but I'm in a hurry. It may, or may not, be of use to someone.

The images are either PCX or TGA format. I think the TGAs have alpha channels so that can be used to cut the weapon out of its graphic.

Examples.

I'm going away for a few days but when I get back, I'll look through the other resources to see if there is anything else of interest (there are lots of explosion sprites, a few textures and many WAV files too). If I think anything is useful, I will do a better job of sorting it out than I did with those hurriedly thrown together weapon images and post them.

Some decent looking stuff here. I'll be interested to see a full rip, thanks.

I'd be interested in the explosion sprites, and any WAV files you can get of the multiplayer audio taunts. I tried to get the WAVs myself and only ended up with what sounds like a line from a training mission.

That pistol looks promising and... familiar.

OK, well when I get back home (I'm going away in about 1hr) I'll package up anything that looks useful and post it. I don't know if I got the MP taunts or not but there are quite a lot of WAVs. I think most of them are mission briefs and ambient loops. I don't suppose the mission briefs will be that useful to anyone so I might miss them out as they take up a lot of space.

Heh, it looks vaguely like the Duke 3D pistol, especially the hands.

Anyways, this is an awesome find, I'm sure these can go to good use!

They look good, but I think they might look better scaled down. Right now they remind me a bit of all those "high-res" sprites everyone keeps making.

High-res sprites are great...aren't they? I'd love to see more.

BTW, this is a hard rip, am I right?

Depends. Those fake "I can use the photoshop resize" high-res sprites look terrible. Actual high-res sprites can look good if they're used well. Most of the time they just clash very badly with the doom atmosphere.

In general if people don't wish to spend time making "advanced" features like high-res sprites actually look good they should keep it simple instead.

I agree....forced hi-res sprites are horrible, but well-used hi-res spites look fantastic. Perhaps a little recolouring would make'em bland in well wit' the background - it worked for me...so far...

And what's your opinion 'bout hard rips? In high quality, they look delicious to me! ;)

Not sure what you mean by that. If you mean are these screenshots of in game models converted to sprites, then no, they are not. Despite the fact that they look like (and probably are) screenshots of models, these graphics are exactly how they appeared in the game. ie, the game itself uses screenshots of models for HUD sprites.

I just got back from my trip away last night so I'll look through the rips over the next couple of days, discard the useless stuff and post what's left when I can.

OK, I got to it a bit quicker than I expected. I was quite ruthless when deleting stuff but I hope that I haven't deleted anything important. There will still be a lot of junk in there too because I did this quite quickly.

For info, a lot of the sprites also had a "partner graphic" that was basically a black and white mask that was presumably applied in game to create the transparent area around the sprite. I deleted most of these and the only ones that I left were from a series of sprites called "puff*". I left the masks for these in because the main sprites are very grainy and would be hard to cut out manually. If anyone needs the masks for any of the other sprites, they can let me know but, for the most part, I think it should be reasonably easy to make the appropriate areas transparent manually.

I have also uploaded the sounds. All I deleted was the various mission briefings (of which there were many). Unfortunately, and perhaps most critically, this archive contains no weapon sounds. I don't know how these are stored in game but I couldn't get them. So this is just a few megabytes of incidental sounds used in the game.

I gotta admit - you did a nice job cleanin' the rubbish, but also keeping the useful graphics alive. Now I'll have a LOT more things to fool around with in Tristania3D 2. Yaynessnessness! :) :) :)

If you don't know what a "hard rip" is, I explain it to you. When someone records the shooting/reloading pattern of a weapon, then individually cuts out each picture for putting them again together in ZDoom - that is a hard rip. The "soft rip" is when you screw around with the game files, and extract the pure graphics. Hard rip is obviously harder, and requires some graphics knowledge, but it can work EVERY time, while "soft rip" can't always, because....well, because some games are just not rippable. In this case, I'll need to warm up SnagIt, and Blaze Media Pro, and ready meself for a little hard ripping :))))) 50-60 pictures should cover an entire weapon usage loop. Then all y'need to do is to remove the background and fill the emptyness wit' a transparent colour, and voila! - you have a perfectly ripped weapon at your disposal!
