With symmetrical frames like that, it looks more like they're standing at attention and less like they're idle. Look at people waiting in a queue or at a bus stop. They lean on one leg, they may cross their arms, they mostly keep their mouth shut...

That would still look little silly on doom monsters.

They are. They're actually on guard. Compare to the Wolf3d sprites.
