[0.4.0] [SW] [TD] "Silver Bullet" yellow key is invisible

Postby sinisterseed » Sat Feb 08, 2020 2:58 pm

This is a pretty big issue.

It's not completely invisible, but when looking at its face while entering the cave it does not actually render. This is huge, however, since the key is trapped and a one-time only kind of a deal. If the player is unaware of its presence in the cave they will completely miss it and once the ceiling collapses it becomes impossible to obtain. As a result, a soft lock in will occur since it is required for opening the final door.

In Redux it renders correctly - https://i.imgur.com/cmLUvBb.png

Small update here.

This is interesting, apparently both SWP and VoidSW render the key's face invisible, but its visible from the sides and behind. So whatever goes wrong here, Redux fixed.

I cannot find anything in the code and SWR's source is not in a compilable state. I cannot find out if this is fixed inside the engine or some added patch to fix the level.

I would assume in the engine. My guess is that if it was the map itself it would show up in other ports, but it apparently does not. I think it's a glitch in the render.

Edit: It apparently shows in DOS too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU4hAOqE5iQ (see 8:32).

So it shows in the software renderer, but not in Polymost, but since I do not have SWR I cannot check how it works around the issue. SWR, like all other older Build ports does not come with any project file that's usable by modern compilers.

I hate projects that don't come with working project files. You want to fix a little thing, that's done in a few minutes and then you have to spend a lot of time getting it to compile.

Oh, they have projects - unfortunately only for toolchains that were obscure when the projects were current, but totally obsolete now.

The curious thing is that a similar rendering glitch can be observed in Wanton somewhere as well, I'll see if I can remember where exactly though, I think it was a green keycard. This time, the face of the keycard renders but NOT the sides (and the back?)

Gotta love those GL glitches... it would be funny if they weren't so annoying to debug...

BTW as a random fact, the even more curious aspect of this particular map is that the music track is different in VoidSW and Redux (can't get music working in SWP, so that one can go destroy itself). In Redux and VoidSW the same track used on Seppuku Station plays (and also Raze), but according to this video there was a different track playing in DOS. I have no idea how to proceed here, I can't find any info about what track is supposed to play on this level - and 3 (maybe 4, if the damn music wanted to work) ports tell the same story, but apparently not DOS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEk67iesIwM&t=63s

And this is Redux, for comparison's sake - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjVx98pAyGI&t=29s

No idea what's the correct track.

Meanwhile, I remembered where I saw that odd green keycard in Wanton. It was on Train.

This one has its face visible, but once you look at its sides or back it becomes invisible. It happens with both voxels enabled and disabled, so it's not related to them.

My suspicion is that these items have the wrong sector assigned and fail visibility checks as a result. Right now I have no means to verify this, though.
For such screenshots, can you please enable "stat coord" in the console so I can look them up without runnning aimlessly through the map?

Certainly ;) .

I actually have a save but since this was from yesterday's master build I figured I would complain over it being from a different version, so I didn't link it.

Here's where that is - https://i.imgur.com/7cz1v3y.png

The curious thing about them is that they render fine under DOS apparently, and also Redux, which makes me think there's some issue with Polymost somewhere.

I hope that place is easier to debug than that yellow key where the entire environment is hazardous.

Yeah, that's the one big bullshit about the key on Silver Bullet, it being trapped is not a bad thing but it makes it essentially impossible to debug since the ceiling collapses immediately once you go inside the cave.

Ironic, it's kind of a good thing that it happens in Wanton too.
