Ion Fury support?

Postby JohnnyTheWolf » Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:21 am

First of all, congratulations on Raze going gold, so to speak! :thumb:

Secondly, is Ion Fury support planned? If my question was already answered, I apologise: I tried to search for it first, but I could not get any clear answer doing so.

Ion Fury isn't planned because while it did exist at some point in Raze, the changes required in order to support the game properly were way too deep and invasive in the engine, and the game broke pretty much every time something changed in the code.

I'd actually love to support it - but the main blocker is that the game is virtually entirely written as CON script, meaning the code is out of reach for me.
I could solve most of the issues with it if the code was natively in the engine or I could just replace the scripts (impossible due to copyright), but having to do extreme contortions to make the existing scripts work is virtually impossible. The same is true for many high profile EDuke32 mods.

Ah, bummer. Thanks for the answer - and the good work!

Oh, and if it has not been done already, I would suggest making a sticky thread somewhere in case newcomers would have the same question.

That usually happens automatically when a question gets asked a lot. We'll see. It's definitely not impossible for that to happen for this one.

Basically Ion Fury is a standalone "addon" for EDuke32. If you strip away all the EDuke32 features it contains, it wouldn't work. That's also why its executable is not much more than a slightly edited eduke32.exe (actually it works with any recent EDuke32 snapshot instead of its native binaries).

I read the thread title as "Congrats on Ion Fury support" and I had a real "WTF?" moment

Good call! I edited the title to avoid any confusion.
