"Gross hack" bridges

Post by Jimmy »

For some reason, a few of the custom bridge actors (radius 32, height 1) that I've placed in my map show up as those "GROSS HACK" sprites. They've never appeared for me before - I'm sure I've been able to use bridges (and of height 1) in the past without these sprites appearing.

I don't want to use 3d midtextures for this particular bridge construct, as I want to simulate a fake floor-over-floor effect. Aesthetically, it looks fine with a fake Transfer_Heights floor acting as the upper floor and the lower ceiling, and the way I've set the map up, both floors can't be seen at the same time. The problem comes when I want the floor to be solid, and I've used bridge actors to achieve this effect - but they appear as "GROSS HACK"s. :?

I assume he's using software

to the OP: Those bridges are taken from Hexen, and are given that weird "GROSS HACK" sprite by default. You can subclass them to make new spinny bridges, or use the custom bridge object instead. (which allows you to set radius and height) Using object 9990 always makes them invisible.

You can also simply add the TLGL<A-E>0 sprites from Hexen to your wad. (I have them in my Autoload too.) They'll replace those gross boxes. ;)

The GROSS HACK bridges were an early and incomplete implementation of the Hexen glitter bridges, designed to be usable in Doom. They predate the other bridge objects. Some people have used them - myself included.

Xaser is so much more bizarrely twisted than far above the rest of us that I'm sure he found some sort of obtuse drug-induced philosophical humor in it.

Irony: people think they see it, when they really don't.

HOW IRONIC!

...Or is it?

THAT TOO, IS IRONIC!

...Perhaps not.
