Any way to get rid of unused textures?

Postby Sonnyboy » Mon Aug 17, 2009 11:20 am

I know that XWE has a command for this, but it doesn't do anything...
Is there a program or function I'm missing that will get rid of textures not used in your map?

I'm using the AVP textures, and that wad is quite a few megabytes... especially what with my dial-up connection.
Any ideas?

It's because there simply isn't any good method to do that except manually.

Remove all textures. Run your map in ZDoom, with the -logfile parameter to save the error report. Add back all textures that are listed as being missing in the log.

That's a very time-consuming way and it won't work if you have more than one map

Wouldn't it be sweet if there was a tool with a .WAD => .PK3 converter, so you could just do a folder compare with your ZDoom logfile and easily delete the unused ones...

Slayer, get your SLumpED ass over here! :D

DeePsea has a routine that tries to prune unused textures from a WAD. It isn't infallible, but it can make a pretty good job.

EnJay, you know how I feel about DeePSea (if you forgot, it's been a while so it's understandable :D ), and I feel dirty all over saying this but:

Yes, he's right, DeePSea has a good function for this. If you can get through all the daunting menus to find it (I'm sure there's a shortcut), it'll do it's job. You might want to keep it installed just for that... Truth be told, before directory loading with -dir, I used to use DeePSea's texture creator/editing exclusively, as it would build TEXTURE1 and PNAMES for you, back when you needed those.

Not to derail the thread, but EnJay, speaking of DeePSea, does RandomLag have any plans to update it ever again?

I can't afford DeepSea.
I wouldn't want it anyway.

If you can't afford something that's free, well, hehe, you've got issues :D

(you only have to pay to get limits on map sizes removed, and a few other little things. If you download and install it, it works as is)

I kinda wish DoomBuilder 2 had a plugin for the spiral staircase (and probally some other ones) generator as well as the in-editor texture editor. Putting sprites on walls was also fun.

Hmm... maybe I would want it.

By the way, does anyone know how they did that cool ripple effect on the download page? I know it's not a shockwave flash...

By way of a hint, and this is from memory because I am at work ATM, the texture deletion stuff can be found by hitting F7 and pressing a button marked something like "PWAD lump editing and more". Once there, you need to open the PWAD in question and then there is a button marked "Texture deletion" or "Texture reports" or something like that.

As for RandomLag, I "spoke" to him a few months back and he was planning on doing some stuff with DeePsea. There are a few minor bugs that we discussed and the handling of PNGs needs to be improved. Also, the install program doesn't work under Vista and he wants to address that. However, he also said that he was very busy with real-life stuff and he put no timescale on any of that work.

Correction

Hit F7 and press a button marked "PWAD Lump Arranging and More". Open the PWAD in question. There are a series of buttons along the bottom of the dialogue that opens. These are marked "Textures used in 1 level", "Texture reports", "Texture deletion" and "Texture Conversion". Texture deletion is the one you want but you may find the others, such as the reports, handy too.

I wasn't far away with my guesswork. :)
