No, not really. Just having to use MinGW constitutes "mess" in my book - IMO Windows code that cannot be compiled with MSVC is broken.

Let's hope it's still in a state where a "git pull" from upstream will do. If it doesn't, I'd concur. You can do all the things Randi described without screwing with the code.
