There's still some copyrighted stuff in gzdoom.pk3
Some data directly derived from the original games is still present:
dbigfont.lmp: Doom's big font
sbigfont.lmp: Strife's big font
spaldoom.lmp, spalhtic.lmp: Original Doom and Heretic palettes
notch.dat, netnotch.dat: Hexen startup graphics. I'm not sure here. Were they taken from the GPL'd source or present somewhere in the game data?

Re: There's still some copyrighted stuff in gzdoom.pk3
I suspect the reason for this is that no free equivalents have been authored. Presumably something for dbigfont could be whipped up from the FreeDoom assets.
Re: There's still some copyrighted stuff in gzdoom.pk3
I think I'd rather those resources be moved to zd_extra.pk3 rather than replaced.
Re: There's still some copyrighted stuff in gzdoom.pk3
Agreed. But we still need a free replacement.

Ah, good to know. Thanks for the info.

What does it mean? Do we see other font than the doom one in future? Hopefully not o.o
Re: There's still some copyrighted stuff in gzdoom.pk3
No, from what I gather (and if anything here isn't correct then please correct me ), zd_extra.pk3 contains the copyrighted assets that GZDoom uses and isn't taken from the official WAD files, and this is so that if someone wants to make a commercial game they can distribute GZDoom without the zd_extra.pk3 (in which case, unless they they provide their own replacement sprites and such it would then fall back to the free ones that need to be put into gzdoom.pk3) so that their commercial game contains no copyrighted assets. For the GZDoom release, though, it would still provide zd_extra so that you have these files for when you play Doom, Doom 2, etc.De-M-oN wrote:What does it mean? This zd_extra is going to be distributed with the gzdoom binary?

Yes. The idea is, if someone should want to distribute a standalone GZDoom-based game, they need only delete zd_extra.pk3 to get rid of any copyright-derived graphics or sounds. To a normal user that just wants to download GZDoom and play Doom with it, nothing needs to be done.ibm5155 wrote:This zd_extra is going to be distributed with the gzdoom binary?

I have been looking through some mods with liberal permissions which contain a BIGFONT replacement. The only one I see as a good option is the one from Simplicity. The mod comes with permission to reuse content and this also has been used by several mods in the past.
Any opinions?

This is what Tormentor used in Stronghold, isn't it?
I have no objections to this. It's a very easy to read and usable font.

Ok. In that case I'm going to use it as a replacement. I have seen it in Austerity, Stronghold and ZPack so far.

Will it be a cosmetic change?
