Project Einherjar - Final-FINAL Release

So I had a fun idea for a way to promote my dystopian novel on Amazon and Smashwords.



Why not a Doom mod?

DOWNLOOOOAD!

5-episode GZDoom mod, 35 levels, all-new weapons and enemies. Shoot up the opposition with 8 brutal weapons, including a retrievable ballistic knife. Stomp bad guys with martial arts -- a good kick is always available with the alt fire key. Fight nasty bosses every few maps in the style of Wolf3D. Get engrossed in the backstory for each episode in the readme file.

Episode 1: The Gaulheim Hit. As a blizzard isolates Gaulheim from the rest of civilization, Juno Radcliffe infiltrates the lair of Dr. Gaul to assassinate her and put an end to her super soldier project and other crimes against humanity.

Episode 2: Deep Into White Hell. Juno awakens as a prisoner of the dreaded White Hell penal colony, where Warden Veidt has restarted the Einherjar project…and plans to use Juno in her next field test.

Episode 3: The Iron Invasion. Juno’s investigation of a cyber-drone attack leads her across the sea to warlike Jotunheim, where Baron Frostgard has been building an army of Einherjar for a full-scale invasion.

Episode 4: The Scourge of Mordin. Juno is poisoned by the mad high priest/dictator of the Mordin mountain colony, mistaken for an assassin sent by Matron. Now Juno must ironically fulfill the madwoman’s worst fear in order to get the antidote.

Episode 5: Return to Jotunheim. When a Jotun research vessel is sunk by a ship bearing the Midgard flag, a new war seems imminent. Only Juno can capture the offending ship and bring the architects of the impending war to justice.

Marty Kirra has been nice enough to let me mod a few of his assets here and there, since his Space Pirate and my novel's protagonist aren't too different (physically anyway).

About the Book Series
Juno Radcliffe is a former army commando and former POW camp warden who lives an empty, solitary life during nuclear winter in the fascist state of Midgard. In The Helios Legacy she becomes a pawn in a power play when the new dictator-to-be orders her to deliver a eugenically perfect boy to her sister dictator on the other side of the wasteland. With a treacherous despot awaiting her, a team of assassins on her tail, and irradiated tundra in-between, the delivery is anything but a simple errand. In Kingdom of Famine, she returns to her corrupt home town to bury her estranged mother and investigate the suspicious manner of her suicide, stirring up a bloody hornet's nest in the process.

The books and the mod both have a lot of Norse mythological influences. Mythological valkyries would choose which fallen warriors got to go to Valhalla; in the book, the Valkyrie Guard polices all of Midgard's male population. The einherjar was what those fallen soldiers became when they reached Valhalla; here, its the name of the super soldier project where hapless male subjects are converted into giant murderous fuck-apes. Etc, etc.

Wolfendoom Fan Episode: Operation Arctic Wolf. A mod of the Wolfendoom adventure of the same name, replacing BJ and the nazis with Juno and the PE enemy roster, plus a few new faces. Contains a modified version of the original Wolfendoom mod, adding new stuff and fixing a couple of map details. Doesn’t need the original Wolfendoom mod to play: it’s basically self-contained.

The book is set during nuclear winter. All the old nations fell apart and were replaced with new ones mostly based on norse mythology. The protagonist, Juno, is an ex-special forces trooper who lives in Midgard, which is ruled unofficially by a psycho lady named Skuld, a former acquaintance of Juno's and chief of the Valkyrie Guard secret police. In the book, Skuld has a project underway that involves the attempted eradication of all homosexual males in Midgard, because she sees them as a constant source of dissent (and because she's an awful fucking person). It's not the central plot of the book, although it does give us something to dread should Skuld remain in power: Skuld's purpose in the book is to get the main plot underway, but otherwise remain in the background. She sends Juno on a diplomatic mission to the city of Lernea, on the other side of the wasteland, as part of a power play. Juno runs into all kinds of trouble along the way, and really doesn't want to help Skuld in the first place, but she also doesn't have a choice.

I'm thinking the mod will be a spin-off that revolves around the "purge" aspect of the story, where now instead of simply eradicating them, Skuld is using them in genetic experiments and turning them into big bad juggernauts in preparation for some major military op. Juno will somehow be forced to shut the project down and probably face off with her old rival.

Just some critiques, like im surprised you're using the grenade launcher of rampage as a shotgun? plus the random swearing with the voicetypes is jarring.

Also, coincidence? Named valkyrie? Protag is one eyed?

At least the Wolfenstein maps will make sense now, arf!

Joking aside, this looks pretty cool. Who says that literature and kill-counts don't belong together?

Edit: Also, I hope that ballistic knife in the custom art makes an appearance. For silent kills, like. :twisted:

I found the voices to be painfully corny, really. Looks nice otherwise, just very corny.

I haven't started work on that yet, but I'm hoping to include it! I wanna have an alternate kick attack regardless of which weapon is out, and the knife would be a very slow, high damage ballistic knife attack.

Well, they're supposed to be the lowest tier enemy, basically cadets and pencil pushers. Thought it'd be funny if they sounded like they were totally in over their heads. Battle-hardened soldiers wouldn't run away or die that easily.

That's more of an observation than a critique. It looks like a shotgun, and it's a dystopian future, so why not?

Yes, coincidence. Though I changed the title back to the original title I had in mind, since Valkyrie 3D is kind of dull and doesn't have anything to do with the plot, except for Juno being a member of the Valkyrie Guard.

Unless the whole mod is supposed to be silly like that, I would skip the juvenile commenting lines on enemies. Unless every one of these enemies were somehow stupidly cocky people, which might explain their rank, or brainwashed fanatics, which would explain how dumb they are intelligence-wise, you would think most people would freeze up in the presence of a gun and make that split-second fight-or-flight decision, which, considering these people are armed, would be to attempt to draw and shoot, not comment and run around like idiots. (Unless you were far enough away that shots might miss, would you try to run if you knew a bullet would always be faster than you?) Or perhaps try to negotiate if they have no backup (and basically realize they're fucked and attempt to make a desperate move anyway), but that's about it.

Basically this.

I can leave out their lines, but then they won't have any ambient sounds to alert the player to their presence. And a lot of the bad girls Juno fights in the book are pretty much just like that: foul-mouthed, arrogant lunatics. And half of the common enemies do try to flee when they get hurt enough (the cannon fodder basically flee at the first sign of trouble if you don't kill them outright, and possibly alert other enemies elsewhere in the level, which is why I rounded the corner and found an army waiting for me).

Besides which, it's a Doom mod. I'm not setting out to completely rewrite the AI. Although it would be cool to give them a ROTT "cowering" state and leave them useless for the rest of the map.

what I mean is that its jarring to see the voicetypes for the women (Very high pitched yet flat) Swearing like every few seconds. Its jarring, feels juvenile and lacks the emphasis and impact swearing usually has, and stands out from the rest of the thing.

I see where you're coming from, but I don't think removing the cussing would necessarily make a difference. I might adjust the voices in the later stages anyway.
