For me it occasionally dips down to 40 fps, but never to less than 30. Of course I also do not use texture upscaling. That's an option that will kill BoA for sure.

Is there any way to make BoA run on a newer engine build that has Vulkan? I suppose this will double framerates in problematic spots.

BoA should work on 4.2.4. What version are you using?

I'm probably doing things wrong, then. How do I go about making BoA woth with 4.2.4?

That thing is two years old. Get the current one from Github.

@Curunir
And if you want to use the Chapter 2 release then use this version of GZDoom, and don't load any mods on top of it. Preferably run it with Doom2 wad since with FreeDoom there are some issues with dehacked and keys.
Don't expect to have a stable gameplay with the github version since it is in development, for instance there should be some issues on Headquarters and on C2 maps. But well some playthrough is always welcome from the community.

Wait, BoA is on GitHub as well? I thought that was just for GZDoom releases... Off I go, then!

Github version is completely different from the Chapter 2 release, so take some time and check all options to see what you can tweak, disable/enable and possibly play it with latest devbuild since we work over recent devbuilds instead of official releases of GZDoom

Re: [Blade of Agony] New screenshots | p179
General performance with Vulkan enabled and turning a few things off from the much-improved special options menu is a lot better. A lot of the levels have become playable now.
There are still certain maps where slows to a crawl, even when I select the Potato preset AND have Vulkan on. The most extreme example seems to be C2M3 where you walk up to the building that needs the purple key, then turn back and look across the map - 20-ish fps no matter what I do. I think it's just the huge visibility range, even with FX distance down to the minimum.
Overall, though, it's a marked improvement over what I used to get before, thanks for helping me actually play the game!
