Bastards: obscure freeware game

The other day while I was browsing around Youtube I came across gameplay footage of a game called Bastards for the iOS systems (iPhone). It is a weird westen themed game build on the Doom engine and appears to be freeware, for more info go here: http://download.pandaapp.com/ios-iphone ... cSfzjt9EpY

I didn't come up with much while browsing for info on the game but I did find the above page and download.

Apparently there is both a lite and full version, I do believe the site has the full version but there seem to be a lot of things missing in the game. The lost soul for instance has no replacement but still used in some levels. There are other resources as well that aren't replaced, mostly decorations and there is only five levels. The lite version only has one level.

Anyhow, I repackaged it and made it compatible for ZDoom for your pleasure. So here you go: http://www.mediafire.com/?fhyv25z66hb1ehl

The texture and level design is pretty damn good but everything else is pretty much hit and miss. I'm currently considering doing an update of it.

Some screenshots or video links would be a nice addition to this post.

Good thing this is freeware, since most of the resources are from Fistful of Doom and Outlaws.

Still, that they were trying to get out there with a full-fledged Doom engine game is interesting.

Actually, none of the resource appear to be from Outlaws. The developers seem to have been careful as to not use resources from retail games, though the chicken from Heretic (well, two frames of it anyway) is used.

Okay, no, you're right. They just look very Outlaws-esque.

Still, a whole bunch of visual glitches, artifacts on the sprites, and a lot of bad edits to good sprite edits. This just plain doesn't look good. :|

At least the levels are original.

The texture and level work is pretty damn good except for a few odds and ends but everything else is either good at best or otherwise mediocre. Though most of its flaws can easily be fixed and improved.

I've done a gameplay video before of that game that I extracted the wad file from the Lite (demo) version and made it working in ZDoom.
Spoiler:
But last month, they were about to start a PC version of the same game named Bastardos. It was on Steam few days ago but then taken down. They did release a beta of it with more maps and stuffs.
I forgot the link but I uploaded the package file of the beta: here
Just checked the version that CeeJay posted and I can say the beta I still have is the newer version of that game since the Lost Souls in the cave map are sprite swapped to some creepy bat with red wings. The Pain Elemental are some modified actor so they stay on the ground and they throw at you those evil bats and the sprite replacing the Pain Elemental.... I don't even know how I could describe it because how very strange that thing looks like...

Also, in that beta, the last map of the wad, we can recognize one of the maps from Fistful of Doom where there was a church, cemetary and the town. They did recopy it all and made it all dark, removed all monsters and things and placed zombies everywhere. Also lack of finding ammos, I had to fight every zombies with the machete (or knife). Behind the building is a big hole that they did make it as addition to the copied map and far down in the big pit is the exit then the game end.
Here's the video gameplay of the map I was talking and the beta PC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0qU67Na2a4 at 13:50.

The textures look weird, it's a mix of doom-quality textures with some crappy pixel art stuff plastered on it.
Kind of a shame, stuff seems okay, but lacks finish.

That is the full version, though it is unfinished and unpolished.

The entire graphic set is just a rip-fest, doom styled textures with cartoonish graphics and ripped graphics from photos, but I enjoyed playing this, and the idea is good but still needs a lot of work. I hope the guy(s) who made this are still working on this mod (I wouldn't call this "freeware game", because it doesn't feel like one)

Really the only thing that would be needed is some polishing up and cleaning of the textures, at least as far as the levels are concerned. Despite some issues, they are pretty good and well detailed. I think it was a matter of time, hence the rushed feel. But I always felt there should be at least another level between 1 and 2, because there is no continuity between those as like all the other maps that start where the previous one left off.
