Paranoid is a 5-map Half-Life mod for GZDooM that features the textures, weapons, enemies, sounds, and other goodies from H-L. It is a work in progress, but you can get information and see screenshots at DooM Nexus.

Why don't you just convert the models to MD2/MD3 instead of hires sprites?

There's an inconsistancy--this topic and the main page of your site say it's Paranoid, but the screenshots page says Paranoia.

Anyway, I'd probably be much more interested in this if it had better sprites. HL models turned into low-quality sprites always look pretty crappy to me, so. If it were me, I'd use Doom-style sprites or maybe Strife-style ones or something (Blake Stone?) because those sprites were designed to be shown at that size.

But that's what I think.

There's that word again. Unfortunately, there's apparently no "just" about it. ReX asked about it before and it seems the answer is that it's far from an easy task.

I know ReX says that a lot of the sprites will not be hi-res but some will. Look at the screenshots. If that Barney is a hi-res sprite, theres certainly nothing low quality about that. Also, I think cartoony sprites like the ones you mention, especially against a so-obviously HL based mod would not look as good as what ReX proposes.

As for me, I think the shots look fantastic. The depth of colour, the quality of the lighting, the consistent and appropriate use of models... It all looks pretty much exactly how I hoped this project would and then some.

You'd need to redo the animations from scratch for each model as Half-Life's model format uses skeletal animation where as MD2/3 does not.

I think I know what's causing the disconnect. People are using the 'Screenshots' link in the left frame to navigate to the 'Pictures' page, then jumping to the 'Paranoia' screenshots page. I had neglected to add a link on the 'Pictures' page to the 'Paranoid' screenshots page, and expected that everyone would jump to that page directly from the news item. Oops. I have fixed the problem and added the relevant link.

Onslaught, please visit the site again and check out the correct pictures. I believe you'll find that there are no crappy "HL models turned into low-quality sprites" on this set. [I can't promise that there won't be low quality sprites in my next set, however. Heh.] Here's a direct link to the screenshots page.

Incientally, you can thank Enjay for much of what you see in the screenshots. He was the one that recommended GZDooM, .png format, models, the works. In fact, almost all the models you see there are courtesy of Enjay, not to mention the skybox, and many other features that you'll get to experience when the project is released.

Are you using custom weapons through Decorate, or just the sprite-replaced ones from the old Paranoia? Did you need any help in improving the "feel" of the weapons? I'm available, should you need me...(Though admittedly not for long - Smash Bros Brawl is coming out tomorrow night and I might be gone for a while =P)

My plan is to customize several weapons using DECORATE definitions (the crowbar will be a modified version of the Berserk, the snark will be a modified version of the chainsaw, the hive-hand is going to be a completely new weapon, I'm considering giving the 9mm assault rifle an alternate fire option for a grenade launcher). The 9mm pistol, shotgun, and rpg will behave in the same way as in DooM. I haven't given much thought to the Tau cannon or the Gluon gun.

I've got a while yet on the project, and I may look you up for help when I'm ready. Thanks for the offer.

Oh Rex, as well as the Headcrab I have made the big alien trooper guys with the Hive hands, you see I was making a Half Life invasion project for Skulltag but I lost interest in the idea, if you want it it is here:

Unfortunately I don't know how much use it is to you as it is not high-res, but I suppose you could use the sounds and the code.

I have downloaded your wad and will check it out when I get a chance. [It may give me an incentive to convert the model into a hi-res sprite.] And yes, I could probably benefit from reviewing/building upon your DECORATE definitions; having the sounds would save me the task of getting them from the H-L resource pak (although I believe i may already have them). Thanks.

And I notice that you have the infamous head crab as your avatar.

I have to agree that this looks pretty cool. Good use of Half-Life resources.

I patiently await something playable now. :P
