32-bit texture sky

Postby Daniel » Mon Jun 27, 2005 6:12 pm

I don't know if it's possible, but I'm sure that allowing 32-bit textures for the sky is a thing that only Randy can do. Nice sky textures are a middle way to make a good map, so this should be an interesting addon for ZDoom. I always desired to make a pretty blue sky with clouds, but the Doom palette is so limited, and blue is one of the most unusable colors in the pallete.

Well, if ZDoom ever gets support for colours greater than 8-bit in software mode, then I'm sure that 32-bit sky textures are a piece of cake.

Problem is, I don't think that'll happen anytime soon... it's been said many times that high colour support for ZDoom is like waaaaaaaaay down the priority list...

Best bet is to use Timmie's ZDoomGL for 32-bit skies...

Or to make it short: 32bit graphics cannot be displayed in 8-bit mode.

There is also an option in Video Options menu that asks if you want graphic quality of 8 bits... so it's only a "burocratic option", isn't it?

And if you assign a palette file only for a specific texture? it could look better... (it will use the 8 bit mode)

Heh... So tempted to link to one of Hotwax's posts... It's a little overkill for this situation tho...

No, there isn't. It used to be there but was removed something like two years ago (and even then it didn't actually do anything).

Not possible in software rendering. Get ZdoomGL.

That's not true. It certainly is possible. The problem here is the amount of stuff that is difficult to modify because it's an integral part of the engine.

Nifty tip: ZDoom can also have EDITED PALETTE LUMPS. D: D: D: SHOCK AND AWE.

But how about the thing I mentioned: one palette file for one texture? Unreal uses it as well, maybe it could be possible (or more unpossible)...

You need a true color display to handle this. Currently ZDoom doesn't support that.
