Plasma Cloud behind Player Setup

Postby Enjay » Wed May 01, 2019 1:06 pm

Just a thought really. The player setup menu (since the last couple of versions or so) has featured a warping texture behind the player preview instead of the generated swirly/smokey/cloudy image. I have no real problem with it and I also like the clean look of the player menu using the new console font.

However, I just wondered if there might be any interest in substituting the player backdrop with something a bit more like the generated cloudy image rather than the noisy grainy image currently in use?

The default is...

and I am suggesting using something, perhaps, a bit more like this...
Image

The above was made using the following image:
Image
I generated it in the fractal generating program ChaosPro and then did some post generation editing to make it look a bit better and tile etc.

However, I'm sure that someone would be able to come up with something better. e.g. I quite like this:
Image

Using this image:
Image
However, I cannot vouch for the original source of that one. It's just a texture that I found on my HD that I edited a little to be suitable.

Obviously, all of the above look better in GZDoom itself because it is nicely animated. So, the attached files can be tested if anyone is interested.

back1.pk3

back2.pk3

Just load'em (separately) and go to the player setup menu.

Even if this suggestion isn't adopted, it's nice to know that this is a moddable feature.

And here's why they cannot be used.

I like the first one too. BTW why are the Doom and Hexen background colors swapped? I think it's so obvious that it must be intentional.

I created the one that is in use now, I would not be averse to replacing it with something better, however for the reasons that Graf is likely concerned about I would prefer to generate it myself because then I know where it came from.

Considering that GZDoom can be used commercially we should make sure that all assets are properly attributed. The image may be harmless, but "I cannot vouch..." pretty much means we cannot use it with current resource guidelines.

Not that I'm bothered (I kind of forgot about this thread to be honest) the "I cannot vouch" only applied to the second image. The first one was generated in Chaos Pro by me and then hand tweaked in Paint Shop Pro by me.

Yeah, but that one's not an improvement over what we already have.

I had honestly forgot I made the one GZDoom uses now. I remember I set the license to cc0 though, to allow commercial use and even without crediting me for it. It was a 5 minute Photoshop job.

It's attached to my original post. On my phone right now so I can't check, but I think it still should DL and work OK.

Just download it, name it b@ckdrop.png and load it. No magic needed.

I rather like it myself, it looks smoother and has more contrast. But what's better really is entirely subjective - and recent posts lead to the suggestion that Graf likes the old one better, so I guess it's what we're sticking with. Everyone has different tastes.

The old one with less noise would be better for sure, but Enjay's first one has too much contrast.

I can reduce the contrast easily enough if the image is seen as desirable.

Enough?
