I am not an artist, but I do have some jRPG sprites that are non-commercial/fair use that have 4 angles on them that I could edit.
I was told that GZdoom can do single sided sprites or 8 sides or combinations where it "fills in the gaps". However, that answer was not as helpful as I was hoping.
Can you set up monsters using only 4 angled sprites? Can you show me an example? Thanks!

I can't answer your question, but this Tutorial for interpolating sprites might be helpful:
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=35856A "Quick and (very) Dirty" solution might be to use the side-view sprites 3 times each, like this:
RBL
RXL
RFL
F=front
R=right
L=left
B=back
