The most important thing for a sound to work in vanilla Doom is that your sounds need to be in "Doom Sound Format." This is not hard to do; most WAD editors (like SLADE) will let you convert WAV or OGG sounds from the right-click context menu.

If you want to make sure they're well optimized, take them into the sound editor of your choice (usually Audacity) and save them to WAV format, at 11,025 Hz, 8-bit, mono. Most of the sounds in the Doom IWAD are also about 3 dB louder than sounds from other sources, so you may need to raise the volume of your sounds to match.
