Yeah, that could work too. You're right, the codebase is pretty bad, I do remember that.

It does make me wonder how big such a recording would be, since I imagine the output would might be something akin to a UDMF TEXTMAP lump per frame. Manageable for IWAD-sized maps but something like BoA has a 9MB TEXTMAP. Even if you remove the static geo like vertex positions, that's still a lot of data.

Hmmm... Maybe saving just the deltas from each frame would make a workable "universal" demo format? If you could do it fast enough, that is.
