[editing] Star Wars Dark Forces

Post by CeeJay »

Is there way to view/import/extract the contents of DF's .WAX file nowadays? I know there is the old DFUSE utilities but these won't work under modern systems.

For those who are not aware, .WAX files are used by Star Wars: Dark Forces for the games sprites.

I have a group of WAX's I'd like extracted and so far I am having no luck.

Spriters Resource has monster and weapon sprites, maybe you can extract the rest from a Dark Forces TC?

Well, the sprites in question aren't stock ones. Those I can find with no problem. I'm looking to acces sprtes from some mods made for the game.

The last I recall, XWE was known to open them, but I can't remember if support was formally finished or if there were bugs with it.

XWE is very buggy, I tend to avoid it like the plague (thank God for Slade) but last time I checked it had partial support for .GOB containers but no real support for the actual file formats within, including WAX.

You can open them with SLADE 3.0.1. The code was broken at some point during development of 3.0.2 so it was disabled and then since it's a very low priority feature, it's been completely forgotten about.

EDIT: Is it possible to extract the individual frames from the WAX?

Right-click->Graphics->Export as PNG?

Nope, it'll only extract the first frame regardless of which one I have in the view.
