UDMF to Hexen MAP conversion

Postby Borg » Sun Jan 02, 2022 11:30 am

Is there a tool that can convert UDMF back to Hexen MAP format?
I could not find anything. I found Hexen -> UDMF converter.

Use F2 (default key) in UDB or GZDBBF and select the format.

[edit]
Let me qualify that statement. It greatly depends on the features used in the UDMF map.
For example:
If the UDMF map is fairly simple and constructed in a traditional manner, then you may or may not discover some oddities (see Enjay's post). If the UDMF map is constructed with the latest Visual Mode constructs, then in all likelihood the conversion will fail.

The only alternative would be to convert the UDMF map the old fashioned way, to copy/paste the sectors, check all linedefs and reset the various specials one by one.

Worth remembering that, unlike Hexen to UDMF where very few features change, UDMF to Hexen will probably lose a whole bunch of information (even something as simple as a UDMF map that uses upper/mid/lower offsets separately will lose its texture offsets).

All I can suggest is for you to either link to or upload the map and see if there is anyone willing to give it a try.

But I gotta ask, why revert to DiHF, after all the map is for GZDoom in any case?

Well, couple of reasons.
First, I use ZETH editor.. Habbits and my old system doesnt support UDB anyway.
I also use older zandronum build.

Anyway, here is the map:
http://ds-1.ovh.uu3.net/ftp/home/borg/wad/aow11.zip
Or just extrat it from aow_v2.2-maps_r101217.pk3

It doesnt render correctly on 2.1.2
No floor texture and broken sky.
When I dumped the map via zandronum and loaded it in ZETH
I noticed that sector 0 is weirdly placed outside. This doesnt look right.

So if someone is bored and wish to inspect the map. Would be cool.
You can PM me so I can even give you info about IRC server were we can talk.

I had used Zeth through all it's versions but unfortunately, due to the fog of old age, I have forgotten how it fits into the development cycle of ZDoom. 3D floors and skyboxes are definitely not supported. So, all I did was to copy/paste the sectors of MAP11 into a Hexen format map.

You probably will have to make extensive use of Slade3 to get most of the resources from the AOW core file or make your own, and bring them into the map manually.

Since you mentioned that you cannot run UDB, have you tried DoombuilderX?

Thanks a lot. Map load fine in ZETH and what is more importand.. it load in Zandronum too.
Still not rendered correctly (still missing floor texture and wrong/weird skybox).
And what is even MORE importand, zdbsp is able to build extended nodes.
So now Ill have to find some time, and try to fix it up :)

As for ZETH I use my own Win32 ZETH fork with a lot off additionans (zdoom and boom).
So it understand 3dfloors and it perform extra boom conversions too ;)

Yes, I tried DoomBuilder 1.x ages ago and I was very confused.
I remember old times of DEU so when I launched ZETH I was pretty much at home.
Thats why I started Win32 ZETH project.

Great news. After playing around with that map, I found that there are 2 things incorrectly placed there.
Upper Stack only Look and Skybox view.
After removing them map renders correctly!

Kappes Buur: thanks again for map dump so I could nail that thingie out :)
