Please help - can anyone identify this IDE connector?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Please help - can anyone identify this IDE connector?

Post by MartinHowe »

Hi, does anyone into vintage computing have any idea what this connector is? We (the charity I work for) were given an old laptop to refurbish and sell, but for data protection they removed the hard drive; that's not a problem, we can get IDE laptop hard drives easily enough; however, they removed the caddy and connector too :( The machine is a Clevo 8317 laptop branded Evesham Voyager, circa 2005, but the part is unavailable; a pity as the machine is otherwise OK.

Hmmmmm. I'm not sure what it's called, but I have a laptop optical drive with what looks like a compatible connector. It doesn't have any central pins in it but it has that same shape with a cutout in the middle that would fit that rectangular housing, and has contacts for the flat pins on the top and bottom. I wonder if it's some sort of hybrid connector that supports multiple connection standards.

...Or I'm wrong and it's something super proprietary...

I would get the laptop it came out of to compare the other side but it's suuuper buried right now

Looking at different store listings it only seems like this connector is called "IDE"... but it's difficult because then you have a completely different slim connector that was used for hard drives, whereas I only seem to see this on optical drives. And yet, that bay is really obviously too big for an optical drive...

The only thing I could find with a picture of what looks like a compatible interface is this random polish listing for an adapter which calls it "mini IDE" http://www.allegro.pl/item900375265_ada ... to_pc.html

Edit again - THIS looks just like yours https://www.pchub.com/samsung-laptop-p3 ... bse-p61431

It's kind of hard to tell the width from the photos, though. I think the one on the drive I have is definitely shorter than that.

Well this is some progress, as the mainboard side looks the same; unfortunately, the conector at the other end looks like a standard cdrom IDE connector, rather than an HDD one. But at least I know it still exists in some form.
