Get Windows Explorer to stop auto-detecting folder contents?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Get Windows Explorer to stop auto-detecting folder contents?

Postby Matt » Tue Aug 17, 2021 6:13 pm

This thread reminded me of something I've been wanting to do for a long time - just have my default generic file view for everything, without getting bogged down for five seconds as Windows tries to search the contents of a folder with 3 half-second sound clips in it and try to sort by album/artist/genre or whateverthecrap.

Is there any way to disable this entirely?

As far as I know, you can hit the X in the address bar to stop Windows from attempting to get tags for files. A solution, but not one you're probably looking for.

If you feel comfortable, you could try using ShellExView to disable "Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler".

It didn't do anything, it still freezes my computer for (and I was wrong in my original post) some indefinite amount of time trying to do this very unwanted thing.

Hmm. You can renable that then. There's a small list of things you can disable in ShellExView that could help:

The "MF [Media Type] Property Handler" list. Obviously, you're looking for WAV, so try disabling "MF WAV Property Handler". A brief Google-fu search brought up someone having their entire Explorer process crashing just by them clicking on a bad WAV (or added extra metadata that Windows was having an aneurysm over). This apparently fixed their problems, as it can't extract the metadata. Read that you should try a restart too after disabling one of these.

If all else fails, I've found this too. Just trying to throw all of the information I can find together.

Should work. It's what I have bookmarked. All folders I open show as list view, with no metadata.

Finally got around to trying this. Works like a charm. Thanks!
