What do you do in your day job?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

I started in web development as soon as I learned to read (7 years old), and started doing freelance web development jobs for fun I guess technically illegally when I was 13. Learned C++ by applying my Java knowledge to working on ZDoom a couple years later which in turn allowed me to pick up some non-web freelance jobs. Coasted through college to have a third party verify that yes indeed I've been doing this stuff for 11 years at that point (I have a bachelor of science in computer science degree), but more importantly my research project professor got me involved with GCC and ISO C++ as well as getting me in contact with the right person for my first formal job. (Of course since he was actually doing his job well the university has since let him go.) I was originally supposed to be developing high performance network tapping/monitoring software, but before we could get to that I ended up being in charge of hardware purchases and packaging the company's software for deployment on air gapped server clusters (which sounds really boring when put like that, so I guess I'll call it maintaining a custom Linux distro).

Currently by day I work for Fortinet on their FortiSASE platform (specifically working on endpoint agents for our cloud firewall), by night trying to start my own company which is building a solution for zero touch server cluster deployment (basically making a tool that would have been nice to have on my first job).

I'm a geriatric nurse in long term care, specifically rehab and memory care (Dementia ward). It's meaningful work, but can be emotionally demanding at times. Especially when you've known residents for years. I'm hoping to transfer to a medical-surgical unit in a hospital at some point. The nice thing with nursing is that you'll always have a job plus you can always change positions if you get board or the current job isn't the right fit.

Is that really? Because our hospital actually uses some of the products (Fortimail, i believe). So that's interest to read for me :)

Yeah the company I was working for was acquired a little less than a year ago. Having only worked for start ups until the acquisition, it's been kind of weird adjustment to me that I actually run into people that are aware of the company/our products. (Even if not the stuff I work on specifically.)

I plug incoming orders into the system at a local company that sells bar/foodservice/plumbing equipment, sometimes entire bars, but my brother works in that department, not me.

It sounds boring, and it kind of is, but 1. I unintentionally got a working knowledge of how US zip codes are laid out to an extent and 2. you start to pick up on customer habits and know what to expect with each one over time.

I design kitchens, suggest placement of equipment and cupboards, advise on colors and countertops etc.
I like the job but hate my workplace :)

Last year I did the same except with bathrooms.
Likewise, I liked the work, but hated my workplace.
It's a struggle, but I try to smile.

Over the last years I've worked in a number of jobs, including being a waiter, a tiny casino floorman, a gas station attendant, a warehouse worker, and I also did some art comissions.

The place where I sold bathrooms was the best, I had a good team of positive people, until a wicked manager came along and made everyone quit, except for me and her. Then more people came along, but they also quit because of our manager. Eventually, my own patience ran dry. Pity, I liked the job and it paid well.

In my first job ever I'm operating machines like this at a company in my hometown:

Not too difficult or physically demanding, but I *do* work three shifts.

I work as a software/database developer for an insurance administrator... which is just as boring as it sounds, but it's stable and I've been at it for almost 10 years now.

Warehouse of a truck fleet. Actually, almost all the past jobs (except the last one) i had were in warehouses, but this is one of the least punishing ones. We have all kinds of items related to office materials, cleaning, food and tools (ironically, the truck pieces, bolts, tires and whatever goes, is in another warehouse). You can find rubber bands, coffee, plastic cups, brooms, inseticides, paper towels, buckets and mops, pencils, pens... all kinds of things.

Last job i had was a little more punishing: a meat processing/packing company: i worked during nightshifts (Fun coindidence, i started one month after i released Nightshift) in cold chambers, having to push pig carcasses out of the chambers so the production line could cut them and take it to the packing sectors... it was hell.

Graf Zahl wrote:@dpJudas: That sounds very similar to how things went for me.

I started programming as a hobby on a C64 when I was 16, went to university for a few years only to find out that this wasn't for me, got a job with a schoolmate developing multimedia software, after doing that for a few years, got hired by a company doing J2ME mobile games, now I am working on configuration software for the furniture industry.
I'd really love to go back to game development, but that industry has become such an unpleasant shark pond that I'd rather stay away from it.

I also never got a formal degree because back in the day there was no such thing.

Thank you Graf. Thanks to you I was able to play "Men in black" on my old Sony Ericson k750i (or that was a Nokia 3310 n70???) instead of studying what is a mitochondria, in school.

building inspector [dwellings] - (i have degree in railway civil engineering, but i laid tracks only for 2 years)

im traveling from one construction site to another and irritates construction managers, because there is a water ponding on their new build flat roofs, or there is not enough cement in the mortar.

I want to be IT guy, but they tell me there is enough of you guys already in the market. And thats good, because i would hate sitting 8h in front of PC, only to switch to another PC to play games for another 4h.
