PSA: Regarding Mods and Resources Hosted on Mediafire

https://www.mediafire.com/policies/data_retention.php

Mediafire has adjusted its data retention policies to delete files they consider "abandoned". For unregistered users, this means files that go 14 days without any inactivity. For registered users, this means files by people who haven't logged in for eight months. This appears to be taking effect in January, if emails that people are receiving are any indication.

If you use Mediafire to host your mods and junk, then log in so they don't go up in smoke! But also, think about moving them to another hosting service. Preferably your own paid web hosting, if possible/fiscally responsible. At least then they get to live and die on your terms!

This has been another in the long, annual-ish series of Kinsie PSA threads about your shit being on the verge of breaking.

Oh man, there's a lot of stuff hosted on Mediafire that has been miraculously working for years. Guess the miracle is about to be over.

Hmmm. It was just a matter of time til this day would come. Gez is right - those somehow-still-not-dead-after-10-years links have proven to be extremely valuable to me in some situations where I was urgently looking for a particular download.

Guess it's time to back those files up... get downloadin'!

Nothing new. That has been policy since March 2019.

Be as it may, i was notified of this by Gez and Xymph on the DoomWiki.

Two links were already deleted. In light of that, i've mirrored the 13 or so links there on DRD Team under the ''Redarchive'' umbrella.

Thank you Kinsie for the heads up, aswell.

I remember reading of such a policy all the way back to 2010 at the earliest. But yes, it's a good reminder to back stuff up.

Perhaps the project posting guidelines should include a recommendation to have mirrors & backups of your works. It's a pity /idgames isn't conducive to active archiving, something on the level of archive.org for Doom mods in general would be great.
