Strife 1995 Beta

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Strife 1995 Beta

Postby Kinsie » Thu Aug 27, 2020 9:51 pm

The Steam version of Strife Veteran Edition has been updated with both the original MS-DOS version of the game and a prototype version from 1995. The prototype was altered for legal reasons:
On Doomworld, Altazimuth wrote:This was gonna be released later but given the leak we figured it might as well be released now. I broke out SLADE, had it remove Doom 1 & 2 IWAD lumps, noted it down, then replaced the offending lumps one by one with blank equivalents. This had to be done since if the sfx were missing it'd I_Error out.

Anyway hopefully I'll try sort out some sort of patcher that takes Doom 1 and 2 and churns out an IWAD that's more like the one prior to modification. A few non-Doom SFX had to be stripped out too.

The proto is pretty interesting though. Got some stuff like inventory sprites of weapons, which have somewhat different designs. one graphic has early designs for the Loremaster and Templar. Lots of other odds and ends.

If you have it on Steam you can find it there as a launch option.

Impressive that Hendricks was able to get it out with the help of NightDive. I reckon that there aren't that many differences along the way, but nevertheless, things like these are well mean't for preservation.

Nightdive also continues to prove how much they care about fanservice. Good times.

This was incredibly interesting to play through and count the differences in map layout and such.
I also didn't expect the weapon pickup sprites to be different, but as it turns out, they were.

A thing that actually picked my interest the most however, was this enemy in the "help me" section:
Spoiler:

It seems priests were originally meant to be enemies of sorts.
There are no other sprites of him anywhere in the WAD as far as I could see.
Seems like he was scrapped and turned into the Loremaster in the final version of the game.

I really like playing old alpha/beta versions of games and see how much was changed.
And this was a treat! :D

That's cool; I wonder what the non-Doom sounds were, though. Taken from other games or from movies?

Looking at the original, unaltered leak, the other sounds were from movies. For example, the peasant/beggar death sound was "Now we see the violence inherent in the system!" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and one of the sounds in the random quit sound roulette was "We're on a mission from God" from The Blues Brothers.

Much like this sprite standing next to him on the HELP2 graphic.

Again, it seems to only be this little teaser that we get to see.

Unfortunately, there isn't too much in the way of new/old content (great new pickup sound), but it's still very interesting to play through and poke around inside the guts of.

Has anyone managed to run Strife 1995 Beta with GZDoom or any other modern source port? I can run the IWAD with recent GZDoom on Mint 18.3 but it looks like it cannot properly utilize neither maps not entities. It can be run with DOSBox but I really don't like to play games like that.

Code: Select allExpand view

Any ideas? Thanks!

It's unlikely that gzdoom will ever officially support the demo, tbh. it's potentially a fair bit of work for no real gain.

Strife went through a complicated history. ZDoom had to go through great lengths to be able to support both teaser versions in addition to the final game. Supporting the beta would likely include more work of this kind.
