Lots of games I haven't played for computer hardware reasons. Never had a modern console growing up.

I haven't played the majority of the Legend of Zelda games. I think I tried to play one of the Nintendo GameBoy and needed to use a walk-through just to find the first dungeon. Considering most of the game is solving cryptic puzzles I figured there wasn't a point in me playing if I had to consult a walk-through constantly. Nice looking games though.

Random off topic comment but I actually own an old CD of Doom wads, which includes NJDoom. Not sure how legit the CD is though. My mom found it for me at a second-hand store. :P

Honestly this for me, too, and not even because of the toxicity half the time. I just don't enjoy interacting with anonymous players, even if they're saying absolutely nothing. Is it stage fright? Potentially. All I know is I quit playing Final Fantasy 14 because the story kept requiring me to do dungeons, which require parties of 4 players to run.

Also:
Fallout 3 - too nonlinear for me.
Perfect World (MMORPG) - Russian translation is not good.

Eh, for me it used to be fun to interact with strangers years ago, and potentially finding new players to have fun with, but later I inevitably got overwhelmed by the toxicity and vitriol waiting to explode in some people frequenting them, and with time the skill gap has also grown exponentially, and I'm no longer having any kind of fun or enjoyment/satisfaction in entering a server, match, arena, dungeon, quest, or whatever, just to get nuked into orbit.

Actually this could be an expansion of that point I've made, not playing MP games because I suck at them.

The party requirement is equally horrible as well, best of luck finding people who stick to the very end of the challenge and don't quit halfway through, kick you, cheat, or aren't plain trolls... I've managed to find some decent people to play games such as L4D in parties and it was pretty darn fun a few years ago, I've had quite a few gold moments :D , but they will inevitably dump you if you suck at the game... And they probably already have an established group and only play with you when one/some of them are unavailable - aka "you're not my first choice".

I am thinking very lowly of MP games nowadays, yes, mostly because well, there is no MP without other people, isn't it? And since the decent ones are hard to find there's just no point. So nowadays I only play SP games, and frankly it's one of the best decisions I've ever taken, my mental sanity is more important, thanks.

Any of the Assassin's Creed games. Why?

It abbreviates to AC, which should mean Ace Combat, one of my favorite franchises.

When the second game came out and everyone was talking about AC2, I was ecstatic that the second Ace Combat game was getting attention. But no.

Even worse was when Assassin's Creed Black Flag came out. Whoa, people are talking about Black Flag! Nope. Another stupid Assassin's Creed.

Also coincidentally, an acquaintance who always greatly annoyed me loved Ezio and always dressed up as him at cons and such.

Megaman X7 and X8, because when I was younger I didn't like the 3D models.
I much more preferred sprites over models when I was a kid, actually even now I still prefer sprites.
Funnily enough I liked Megaman Legends.

I wonder how the Assassin's Creed fandom is dealing with Animal Crossing now...

(also wondering if I'd be dunking on "high-def" Doom texture/sprite projects as much if, you know)

Back in the day there were loads of "shovelware" CDs where whoever put it together simply trawled download locations - such as the CompuServe Action Games Forum, where lots of people put Doom stuff before the Internet was really a thing - and they would then just shovel it all on to a disk and sell it or give it away on a magazine cover or whatever. Often the files were stripped of any text files that may have accompanied them and sometimes the WADs had been edited (e.g. I found some of my own maps with a bunch of added textures for some reason). I actually once bought a box containing a couple of floppies-worth of doom WADs from my local computer store only to find almost half of the maps were mine. That was a good investment.

It's also how I feel when COD Modern Warfare wrested the acronym of "MW" from the once proud MechWarrior series.

That reminded me of my own dumb reason for not playing a huge number of modern Unreal Engine games (like Mechwarrior 5 and Satisfactory) as much as I would otherwise. Something about the renderer, which I believe to be the anti-aliasing, makes things unrelentingly blurry and it's infuriating. I have good enough hardware to play on maximum settings, which is for me a huge part of the experience with immersive games like Mechwarrior. But no matter what I do, it comes out looking like someone splattered oil all over my screen.

Totally legitimate and rational reason. Part of why I hated the weapons in Q2 so much...

Well, I ended up fixing it after this post. There's a russian mod called Berserker that has a fix, bascially implemented that as a CVAR option for Yamagi Quake II and it got merged in :D: https://github.com/yquake2/yquake2/pull/561.

Matt wrote:Thinking of my own that isn't one of the following, not because the reasons aren't stupid but because they cover too many games:

Never got around to the registered versions of a lot of shareware just because I didn't have a "cheque or money order" or credit card, but I guess that just goes back to "couldn't justify expense" in a family that never, ever ordered anything by mail.

I wilfully avoided everything Sega for my entire childhood because of the edgy ~attitude~ ad campaign and shit-talking Nintendo. Eventually got over it but by then I was going through other Bad Shit in my life so I could never justify a console to my parents. (Not sure why that stopped me from just occasionally renting a Genesis at Blockbuster though)

Yeah they aren't stupid reasons at all, quite legit really. Regarding the Sega stuff, I can understand the resentment due to the ad campaigns if you were a Nintendo fan. The ads weren't that aggressive in Australia like they were in the States.

I'm not really into Multplayer games either. To me, a game is an escape and that can either be something simple if I'm tired like a run and gun title on a console, or something with a great story to escape into.

lowskill. wrote:- Any game requiring high end hardware because I am bankrupt. They're too expensive usually as well, not to mention the costs of said hardware, and I cannot justify the expense, especially if it's for only one game - HL Alyx would be a perfect example here, yeah, I am not spending some $10K on VR hardware to play a single game, no thanks.

I can appreciate that, especially from back when I was younger. Would you go back and play those demanding games once commodity hardware is capable of playing them or would the moment have passed?

I've used VR stuff before at a mates houser and while I admit it wasn't calibrated properly for me, I got quite nauseous during gameplay. So yeah, not overly keen on buying all that gear just to feel sick, which is disappointing because I love Half-Life! I hope this mod can mature into something usable for non-VR users wanting to play Alyx.

I also never had a modern console. I had the Mega Drive but that was the last one, switched solely to PC gaming thereafter and the parents didn't mind as they thought it was great the old stuff still worked on newer computers (well, as we know now, to a degree). Still have a few Windows 98 boxes and other retro PCs around for those super nostalgic feels.

Dark Forces due to lack of save facility; not a stupid reason, though.

Doom 3, Doom 2016, Eternal Doom and any other Dooms that might come out, as they are not classic mode games; of course this POV is what some might consider ... unnatural :p

Seriously, I have no interest in playing any modern games, not just Doom ones; they all require a lot of effort to mod for due to the use of 3D levels and graphics in particular and often feel just 'weird' to me.

Plus there is SO MUCH classic game content that I will never run out in the 45 years before I hit 100 and by then I probably won't care :)

I refuse to play titles if i can't run them in 4k resolution. Some older titles are just incompatible (shockingly a few brand new ones too..), others run like crap and in some cases the UI is just too small, but the main problem is going below native rez in fullsceen will resize and reposition all my windows and desktop icons, and alt tabbing is horrible, which is just too much hassle to deal with. Downscaled internal resolution is okay though, and sometimes i can use an app to inject a (borderless) windowed mode that is then stretched out.
Some other titles may work if i switched to win10 but i can't be arsed until I get a new m.2 ssd and that is potentially years away.

I end up never playing some games that I'm actually looking forward to beating and have already purchased: every time i think about trying them, I get the feeling it would be too much effort to (learn how to) play or somehow it would require more attention than I think I can give it "at the moment". This is coming from someone who averages 4-5 hours a day according to my steam profile. :P
