It's infuriating how much software does things wrong - the single biggest issue is that a lot of supposedly cross-platform software that's being developed on Linux just imposed their Unix-based conventions on every platform, never mind that they have their own places to store data. The amount of directories in my home folder that start with a '.' is unbelievable.
But most of this can be blamed on Microsoft and Apple. Instead of providing a simple and easy to remember interface for these special directories, the functions to retrieve their paths are convoluted messes that are so hard to use that many developers just ignore them. Have fun reading the i_specialpaths implementations in ZDoom's source...
