Re: System Shock Enhanced Edition
It's a pretty good port. Built on top of Kaiser's renderer, to boot.
Not released for the GOG version yet, but shouldn't take too long.

The GOG Strife VE wasn't exactly hot on the heels of the Steam one. It did come out (and was very nice) but it took quite a while to arrive.Kinsie wrote:Not released for the GOG version yet, but shouldn't take too long.

It seems to be on GOG for me. Downloaded 2 days ago.Kinsie wrote: Not released for the GOG version yet, but shouldn't take too long.
Re: System Shock Enhanced Edition 4K Update
Played 5 hours of this so far... the enhanced engine features (especially improved controls and rendering) definitely helped in allowing me to get into and digest this game, however - haven't played it back in the day - I find it really hard to play these maze-like, abstract 90's levels. I'm constantly thinking, "wooww look our game engine can render diagonal walls" and after exploring most of the medical level and looking at the revealed automap, I just had a headache. =P
Still, it's a good game, but to me it's an acquired taste, coming from someone who's only just played it.

Agreed here. I only played it once back in the 90, I got totally lost after having played for several hours and lost interest after that. So my interest is low.

Re: System Shock Enhanced Edition 4K Update
I played it in the SystemShock-portable (SSP) version, that ran good on WinXP. When I moved to Windows7, the SSP stopped working so I started looking for a W7 compatible version. I enjoyed it, I even considered the SS leveldsegin to be suprior to doom's level design.
Now, when I look at it, both from player side and from the editor side...well, I was foolish. Although I enjoyed it, I cannot wrap my head around the levedesign anymore. The only thing I really like about SS is the mouse driven interface, that I really miss in gzdoom. And the movements/tilts of view - something that nash tilt++ has brought - when player starts running, the screen tilts a little to front, when player stops, the screen tilts a little to the back, and so on.

Can't get over the 4:3 stretched HUD aliasing...
Re: System Shock Enhanced Edition 4K Update
System Shock was an amazing game "back in the day" and a really interesting change of pace from the other games that were appearing in Doom's wake at the time but it does have all the flaws people have mentioned in this thread. Even at the time, I found sections quite painful to play.
System Shock 2 was, in my opinion, the one where they really got it right - but as a big fan of the Thief games (from the same people), it is weird to hear so many familiar Thief sound effects (and, from memory, even see some familiar assets - spiders for one I think) when playing in an entirely different setting.

Re: System Shock Enhanced Edition
The store description is the previous version of Enhanced Edition which was a bunch of hacks and wrappers applied to the old DOS code, but supposedly the actual game itself has been updated to the Source Port if you reinstall it.Enjay wrote:Seems I may have mis-spokenEnjay wrote:The GOG Strife VE wasn't exactly hot on the heels of the Steam one.
