Looking for help to recording some weapon sounds of MOHA.

Post by Solid_Beard »

Hi

I'm making a suondpack for RTCW and maybe Enemy Territory using Medal Of Honor Airborne weapons sounds in the multiplayer an it was the only way to get most of the weapons sounds. I already manage to get the sounds I need one thing is missing is the distant gun sounds and I figure the only way to get it is using another player as an assistant for the specific sounds. If you're interested to help in this let me know.

Welp...I had the same problems years prior, when I needed background war ambiance, which shall be useful for certain levels. Maybe the tips of mine shall prove effective in your endeavors.

1: You can download a sound recording software, and record the sounds in a WAV or MP3 file for yourself. Free PC Audio Recorder is free (thank you, Captain Obvious), easy to use, and yields pretty good results. Audio Playback Recorder 3.6 can also be a viable option. All you need to do is start the game, save it at the appropiate location, from where you desire to obtain said sounds, press the "Windows" button, run the sound recording software, get back into the game, record the duration of your wish, then back to the desktop and stop recording.
Mind you however, if you have an integrated sound card - forget this method, those shitmountains are incapable of recording anything.

2: Another method is to rip the files from the game's resource file. This way you don't need to play the game at all or record anything, you can take the files directly from the game resources. Dragoon Unpacker is an excellent choice for this task, can be used for both sounds and images, there are only a few exceptions where it failed extracting. It's also a free software and you needn't to install it, I think you should give it a try.

1. He needs the sound of distant gunfire which is not possible for a single player to capture.
2. The game's audio resources are in a proprietary "EA Layer 3" audio format, the nature of which is seemingly different for every single EA game in which it's used, and that to my knowledge, nobody has managed to decompress correctly. Good luck.

I wasn't sure that "distant gun sounds" were actual players firing their weapons, or an ambience. As for extracting audio, as long as the files are in WAV or MP3 or any kind of sound format, there is a high chance that they can be extracted. I also heard about a tool called Quick-BMS, but I'm not entirely sure about how to use it. Even though there is no perfect method for getting these sounds, they definitively worth a try.

I already did that with GeForce Experience and seperate the sounds that I need with Audacity and the quality is pretty good :D .
2: Another method is to rip the files from the game's resource file. This way you don't need to play the game at all or record anything, you can take the files directly from the game resources. I tried using the Dragon Unpacker, it doesn't support .xxx files (those files are not related to porn) and it doesn't even work with the files of Pacific Assault.

Speaking of extracting there is another problem that I came across while trying to extract the weapons sounds from the game folders and for what I discovered so far is the Weapons sound files are not in the CookedPC folder, as far as I believed. I garantee you if you see the file "Aud_Weapons_All_SoundRiot_stream.xxx" this is not the weapons sounds, this is actually the launch with the parachute sound effect (Don't know why they name it like that :? ). I notice it while I remove this file from the folder and the game realize that the sound file is missing from the game and it doesn't care if the file is missing. So I thought that maybe if I remove the same audio files from the folder I may find the weapons sound. Unfortunately with many attempts I discovered that the sounds that I need are not in same folder of the audio files. The only sound files of "Aud_filename.xxx" that seems to have an effect in the game are only the background sounds and possibly the music and it was the only way to record the weapons sounds from the game without the background sounds effect's. Also the "Gcm_filename.xxx" file are the texture of the weapons have an effect in the game too. At this point I believe that the weapons sounds are not in the "CookedPC" folder but inside the game somehow or maybe like wildweasel said (Honestly I am not an expert in programming so I could be wrong about that).

To be fair I could only record the sniper's shots from Operation Varsity. But just those unfortunately.
I also heard about a tool called Quick-BMS, but I'm not entirely sure about how to use it. Even though there is no perfect method for getting these sounds, they definitively worth a try.
I could give a try but maybe I might be in the same problem as I said before.

However, before I posted this I manage to extract some possible weapons sounds from the archive's inside the disc with UModel but I don't think are those. Those files are labeled as "soundriotrawasset" I opened with Audacity and the quality is really bad and they sound completely different from a gun shot. I don't remember what .xxx file was maybe I'll search it and extract them again.

I still believe the option to require another player in a private multiplayer map and record the distant sounds. We'll see.

Thank you for your answer's guys. :)

Have you tried HyperRipper as well? That's a very useful tool within inside the Dragon Unpacker. In several cases, it can find audio/image files within unsupported archives as well. :) of course if you've already tried it as well, then I'm sorry :)

Hyper Ripper doesn't work so well if there's any compression, encryption, or anything that doesn't directly resemble a known file format. I've tried with this one.

Hm...well, then only the Quick-BMS left. It's less self-explainatory than HyperRipper, but there's a whole SHITLOAD (more than 4000!) plugins for it, and apparently, it does work under Windows 10 flawlessly, despite being "only" 32bit. It is also very quick! (duh!)
As a very last resort, it may worth a try, otherwise...well...only the direct recording left. :(
My experience tells me that one ripping tool is just not enough. For instance, Quick-BMS could not read World War Zero but apparently, HyperRipper could. In the case of War Train: Normandie, HyperRipper failed, but Quick-BMS proved to be useful.

Just point out that its not so easy. Airborn is an already quite old game.

Also, you can do so in audio editor. But thats a little tricky.
I dont know how its made in "medal", but IRL sound waves with distance absorbs by air. But air, as well as the rest gas/liquid/solid body, absorbs sound with different wavelength with different strengths.
So, high pitch absorbs the most, medium frequencies with medium strength and low frequencies can "live", and travel, in air very long period of time.

But I dont know how to do so in audacity.

Yeah, and it's a fun game, even ridiculously funny at times. Apeirogon if you're gonna buy the game and help me with the sounds I'll be happy :D . If you're interested to buy the game of course.

Looks like you gonna record it the hard way :) Make sure you have an additional software which will help you to trim the recorded sound file, remove the unnecessary parts and make it loop. I'd recommend AtomixMP3. It's easy to use, and allows you to trim sound files to your hearts content. This is the one I use when I record my ambiance as well, and it works absolutely marvelous! The trial version can be obtained for free, and it works under Windows 10. You get a notification in every 15 minutes, but that's all restriction you get. There are also great amounts of useful plugins for it which can be useful for ambiance (pan, flanger, loop, highpass, watersweep etc.)

Oh BTW, it records 14K WAV files, and will NOT read OGG extension!
