Why is Touhou so popular? (No complaints, just curiosity.)

to be completely fair zun's illustration style is pretty heh

I mean the designs are cute and I even find a little bit of cuteness in his illustration

but among the fan community, zun's own art is a pretty big meme due to its uh, quality.

As much as I love shmups, especially bullet-hell, I've never played a Touhou game. And it's not like the art style puts me off - I'm a massive fan of the CAVE stuff, some of that (especially Joker's work) is rather cute.

In addition you could say that if a music genre exists, there are Touhou remixes in it.

Please, you need to find me a reggae remix of one of these songs. With vocals. I'd die laughing. The more Max Romeo/Bob Marley-esq the better.
