Flightsimlabs uses a malware and calls it "DRM"
Flightsimlabs uses a malware and calls it "DRM"
I'd laugh if this wasn't an extremely serious offense.

In all seriousness, first websites that use your computer to bitmine and now this? YOU IDIOTS MAKE EA LOOK REASONABLE! IS THIS A HOLD MY BEER CONTEST FOR WHO IS SHITTIER OR SOMETHING? *Insert unintelligible angry noises here*
I get that you want to catch pirates and punish them BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD YOU HAD TO DO IT IN THE MOST ASSHATTED WAY POSSIBLE! IS THE CONCEPT OF COMMON SENSE EVEN A VAGUE NOTION IN YOUR PEA HEADED NINNY? BECAUSE HOLY HELL THIS IS THE WORST WAY POSSIBLE.
This kinda reminds me of that Japanese R-rated visual novel that if you pirate, would snap your picture though your webcam and post it on a forum saying you were a pervert and had to publicly apologize for it to get taken down. Kinda shitty but at least it was not personal information or YOUR FUCKING PASSWORD BEING HARVESTED.

Didn't expect Sonic Gather Battle to influence another game so soon.

Quite the dick move, AAA, INDIE, FREE FUCKING GAME MAKERS! RICHARD'S OUT FOR EVERYONE BECAUSE PETER AND WANG IS RUNNING LOOSE, AND JOHNSON AIN'T GONNA SAVE YOU.
In summary: there are dicks everywhere.

Damn, this is why I never bothered with fan games. The community just seems so obscure and I definitely have no interest in clicking executables that aren't open source.
Re: Flightsimlabs uses a malware and calls it "DRM"
Of course it's the Sonic fandom that would spawn such a thing...

If signatures were displayed in threads on this forum this would've been in mine by now.insightguy wrote:Quite the dick move, AAA, INDIE, FREE FUCKING GAME MAKERS! RICHARD'S OUT FOR EVERYONE BECAUSE PETER AND WANG IS RUNNING LOOSE, AND JOHNSON AIN'T GONNA SAVE YOU.

Is it too much to hope that this will finally raise some awareness and DRM will finally be ostracized by the entire industry?
I'll take that as a "yes".insightguy wrote:In summary: there are dicks everywhere.

I doubt it will affect DRM. What these people do already constitutes a felony in many countries so they would be in deep shit if someone took action.

Yeah, this is less "restricting the product you bought" and more of "the product sold to you is spying on you and harvesting your data". Daddy NSA must be so proudGraf Zahl wrote:I doubt it will affect DRM. What these people do already constitutes a felony in many countries so they would be in deep shit if someone took action.

Re: Flightsimlabs uses a malware and calls it "DRM"
How long d'you reckon before they start doing DRM legislation too?
Re: Flightsimlabs uses a malware and calls it "DRM"
I don't think they will, to be honest. At least not for a decade or two.Wiw wrote:How long d'you reckon before they start doing DRM legislation too?
Besides, this particular issue is quite covered in existing laws. I don't think Flightsimlabs is getting off scot-free here.
What they did here was a gross abuse of privacy (actually collecting user passwords), not to mention intentionally introducing actually malicious code into their software's executable. There's no way they're going to escape seeing a day in court, especially with the media coverage this is getting.
And the excuse "this does not affect legitimate users" - it doesn't matter. Malware is malware no matter how you cut it, and two wrongs don't make a right. One crime does not make it okay to commit another, especially when the second crime is much more serious in nature.
