Back on topic, even though fidget spinners are pretty vilified on the 'net now, I was literally holding one while reading this thread (and only have it sitting down because I'm typing). I semi-shamefully love this damn thing.

Come on people, everyone knows that Dancing Baby is the real old person meme.

As for fidget spinners, I don't really have much exposure to them, but I have noticed that they are helpful for folks with attention disorders, which makes me feel that they are neither junk nor something I'd be interested in. Of course, they've become a fad and a distraction in the classroom, but that's hardly anything new.

Meh, it's just a craze. It will pass. I get that there is something quite satisfying in their action but they really don't do much. So, they're pretty dull and, as a result, I expect the craze to disappear more quickly than other similar crazes. I hope they do because, as a teacher, every other kid in class getting one out and spinning it like it was something amazing gets old pretty quickly. Yeah, I get it, you have a little, well balanced thingamajig in your pocket that spins in a mildly entertaining way. Big w00p. At least Rubik's cubes, Tamagotchis and even those little finger boards could do something. And, of course, kids tend to have the cheaper, crappier made ones that are, consequently noisier.

As far as I know there is no evidence to support them helping people with ADHD. Despite that, that's the first argument that kids throw back at you.

"Put that away please, it's annoying."

"Yeah, but they help people with ADHD."

"No they don't and, BTW, I know that you don't have ADHD anyway."

I have one of the heavier duty fidget spinners made of metal, and it is much quieter. I know they don't do a lot but being someone constantly afflicted with ADD (it's just ADHD without the "Hyper" part; it goes wonderfully with the crippling anxiety and depression, let me tell you), having one in my hands I do feel some modicum of focus trying to return when I'm trying to complete some sort of project, whether that is visualizing an art project or the next mission of one of my BattleTech MegaMek sessions.
I do think the actual fad or craze about the damn things is fucking stupid, however, and anyone who's going out of their way to do little "stunts" or "tricks" with the thing brings it from coping tool to stupid toy. These aren't people trying to focus, they're just bored.
The bluetooth-enabled ones (they exist, and they are catching fire) and the light-up ones are some of the more... [censored word] concepts to be brought on board to the fidget spinner fad.

Most aren't even that. They're just doing it because everyone else is; to not have one means you aren't in with even a shout of being a cool kid or even just "belonging".

Yup, gotta come up with as many variations to milk the cash cow before it dies.

That is something I didn't understand growing up, but that's for another discussion.

I'd recommend everyone in this thread to watch this to know how fidget spinners work.

Magnets? Those are actually much more fun. I like tossing them on metallic things that aren't or appliances or too valuable.

Oh hey, those old sizzler things that made those weird crackling/sizzling sounds when they came together. I still have those somewhere, in that form, and a more spherical version.

My nieces gave me a ceramic spinner the other day.

I like it, keeps me from biting my nails. I now realize that I tended to do the same thing with coins whenever I'd been mentally fatigued or sitting down for too long, so it's a step up from having to chase them whenever they rolled onto the floor.
