If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Very nice, Blizzard! As nice as OpenGL is, StarCraft doesn't need a power house to run.

This is going to take a minute... but will resolve many of our compatibility issues with low spec machines. We will have a PTR build for testing in the coming weeks as it is ready.

It's funny how the drivers are quite well done compared to the opengl ones, hmmm at least it'll make the game even run in those old intel gmas :D (and also in my amd with their broken drivers)
You can thank Microsoft attempts at monopoly for that. In the end it was all an attempt to squash Linux (with other ongoing efforts to do so as well - they have been entered into legal public record due to antitrust lawsuits).

OpenGL on Windows was a NT3.5/NT4-era prospect sidelined by Alex St. John for DirectX and the rest is history. I wouldn't think it'd have to do with Linux squashing, or even Mac squashing.

They do try to bring a DX11 Warp driver for it anyway at least, they just don't want to provide proper ICDs out-of-the-box themselves (historically, they never had done that for any shipped video driver ever since OpenGL isn't well, theirs.)

As for linux... Mesa3D was created for a similar reason, and quite similarly you'd still have to get those closed source vendor drivers for more proper OpenGL support as well.

what could've been done to avoid catastrophe is appropriate extension checking and having fallbacks for the required missing extensions as well as having a fixed function baseline functionality i mean it's all still just 2d sprites and some webms thrown in it's not a lookup table sector linedef draw hackery mess of a clusterfuck that needs 4.x's extensions to render properly
