Files with .pk7 extensions are compressed using 7-Zip, where .pk3 files are regular Zip files.

To add, the difference itself is superficial. The file extension does not matter to ZDoom and calling it somemod.foobar would load just the same, as long as ZDoom understands the container and compression method. Calling a 7z archive .pk3 (and some are, to note) will matter not for any sane archival program.
When it does matter, however, is with storage. The /idgames archive wont accept anything that isn't a .wad, .pk3 or .pk7 (WAD, deflate (zip) and LZMA (7z) formats respectively) extension. You also use .pk* to differentiate between an archive an end-user should unpack or not (one would expect to always unpack a .zip, but never a .pk3, even though they are both the exact same type of file).

Personally, I use "pkz" to be irritating better differentiate from Quake 3 packs. I was doing this before "pk7" was even a thing, as there was a brief attempt to standardize "pkz" (and "p7z") for ZDoom packages. I still use it to be irritating out of habit/preference.

At least you admit that it's irritating (and ignoring the users' file type associations.)

It's more that I admit it would be more realistic to go along with everyone else than try to get them to use a better standard. :(

It's certainly less headache renaming something for a release than trying to explain what to do with the file.

When I double click a PK3 it opens in 7-zip because I intend to develop using PK3 files as well as audit them in context with game content development. The 3 is for the 3 in Quake III Arena.

When I want to play them in Zdoom, I just have Zdoom in the Send To menu. It's more clicks, but dammit they should've stuck to pkz from the start. or ZAD.

Same here. WAD and a few other supported types open in Slade3. I don't have ZDoom anywhere in the menu.

ZDL is good for that. Can order things around and even drop loose text files (Decorate etc.) in to test things quickly.

The "Send to" menu is actually quite convenient if you frequently want to open stuff with an application you do not want to set as default.

That said, I rareyl use such stuff for Doom. Command line rules!

Just learned how to add my Doom stuff into Send To after all these years. This is amazing. Goodbye Open With menu!

I think they covered that in the Windows 95/98 manual.:) I think I still got mine. I wish they made a new one because I barely use any of the features they've added since then.
