I'm probably in no position to really attest to the community, but seeing as I've been playing the game since it came out in '94? I think it's safe to say it's pretty sizeable, considering there's 20+ years of mapping and modding. As iconic as Doom is, it's not that well known with the current generation. Too much Call of Duty and military-sim shooters nowadays to really make Doom (or any 90's shooters for that matter) stand out at all, in the light of realistic looking graphics and whatnot.

edit: ate a word. It was nom.

The funny thing is that all of those Calls of Duties will be dead in 5 - 10 years and will dream of lasting as long as Doom's modding community. People were like "damn Quake is soooo gonna kill Doom modding" but to me the Quake community looks dead as shit... I've never seen any other modding wiki as well maintained and updated as the ZDoom wiki...

^ indeed. Many talents migrated to Quake2 and/or Half-Life back then. The only active creative part left are the singleplayer mappers, Quake is largely miniscule for modding. there's:

- quakeworld winner stats modding community
- kids wanting to clone modern console/pc games for the psp
- repacks of old HD content presented anew and 'modern'

I don't bother releasing anymore stuff because it'll just fly past their head for not being a new game, a new brightskin config or not HD. much like they don't get a software renderer. what a waste of time that was

Doom modding is pretty big and I'm sure it'll just keep growing endlessly. Coming from UT99 modding to this was a very overwhelming experience for me.

Also, people who cannot appreciate the beauty of software rendering are the worst.

The thing I like about Doom modding is that it's really easy to whip up a map and blast through it a few times in a day, or if you really want to get fancy there's plenty of scripting and support for advanced features in case you want to make, say, System Shock 3. It's easy to get into and more powerful than you'd imagine.

On the other hand, the modding community doesn't feel that large to me. When I was more active in the circles I'd often see the same names pop up here and there; now that I don't really mod for Doom at all, it's not on my radar at all. And more people drop out of the mod community every day (death, illness, growing old) so the question is: is there enough influx of modders to keep the Doom community alive?

These days I don't mod much, if at all, and a lot of the knowledge I've gained is lost - for example, I don't know how to write ACS anymore! (Some would say I never knew) - and there are probably a lot of late 20's/early 30's people like me who just got caught up in life and don't have time for Doom anymore.

I think that there are always going to be people interested in doom, no matter how old it gets. I got into doom modding after I discovered Doom Builder 2 and began to build hexen levels with it. This was back in 2009, when I was 11. A couple years ago I told a friend of mine about doom and showed him some of my mods. He had never heard of the game at the time, but now he mods with me and is a member of these forums. The fate of doom's modding community is in our hands.

Serious answer: The Doom community is big enough to get mainstream attention and self-sustain with new blood, but small enough that the poisonous elements that propagate larger-scale mod communities like Elder Scrolls and Minecraft are unable to get a real foothold.
