Doom Aspect Ratio

Oh my. I feel old remembering I always thought 4:3 was the shit and it was gonna stay even when widescreen started to pop out.

Anyway, out of curiosity, what's your aspect ratio for doom?

Up till a year ago, I was rolling with 5:4 for half a decade. Changed to 16:9 and could not go back, not for a million bucks

16:10 for obvious square pixel related reasons. I usually play in 1280x800 or 1600x1000, depending on how much extra space I need on my crappy "Full HD" screen.

I'm among the probably very few people who played the original doom on a CRT while keeping the pixel ratio at 1:1, rather than stretching it to the native 4:3 (I also had a 5:4 CRT once, but still did the same thing).

I think 16:10 is probably the nicest compromise between the wide angle of view of 16:9 and the vertical range of 4:3, if we consider them having the same horizontal FOV, because a lot of comparisons use equal vertical FOV instead, which is just plain wrong, man.

Actually, it's fixed at 16:10 ratio because there's no options for 21:9 (not 29:9, derp >.<"), but the resolution is 2560x1080.

Very much this. Monitor's actually 5:4 but I'd rather have the letterboxing than it trying to "fix" the pixel ratio. Anything else just looks wrong to me now.

Keep hoping ZDoom/GZDoom can properly support 1:1 pixel ratio some day, so I can be sure new artwork looks right...

It doesn't help that to accurately stretch from 320x200 to 320x240 on a LCD you'd need to upscale to 1600x1200 minimum for "pixels" to have entire dimensions (5x6), and that kinda goes above what a 1080p screen provides... however if only I could have afforded a 1920x1200 screen... but they're ridiculously expensive just because they sell less due to not being Full HD™.

But yeah, I'd rather have 1:1 pixels than "the way it's meant to be played" just because mode 13h is 16:10 but all CRTs were 4:3 so everyone went with "just stretch it".

Except for the part where the artwork was designed to be stretched. I'd rather have it the way it was actually intended. ;)

I would, too... if I could play in 1600x1200.

16:10 monitor. Chocolate Doom fills the screen nicely (with pillarboxing) at 1280x800 on any 16:10 screen.

And yes, every asset in Doom, including art, sprites, map drawing and automap geometry, was designed to be stretched from 16:10 to 4:3. This is quite firmly established. Can't you force any aspect ratio in the Set Video Mode menu to your liking anyway? I know I could run 320x200 on any 16:10 screen with square pixels. Is it still an issue?

The misinformation about aspect and pixel ratio that some people show here is just staggering... :?

Not only was Doom developed for a 16:10->4:3 stretch but with high resolutions and the existing ratio compensation the precise screen resolution to display it correctly really shouldn't matter anymore, yet for some people this seems to be such a major issue that they degrade their experience...
