Why Doom 2 and not 1?

Also, I hope that machine can't actually take quarters, because I'm sure that'd be woefully illegal. (It's possibly "borderline illegal"* anyway, but if money exchanges hands, that'd get the wrong kind of attention.)

* Should be no different to putting a legally purchased copy of DOOM onto a regular computer, which you set up in your store/arcade for anyone to play. I expect that would be okay, but I'm not a lawyer.

That would be covered as "unauthorized commercial exploitation" which is forbidden with Doom's data.

it might work for an open source game though, after all a Nexuiz cabinet was on Flashpoint once.

Reading the blog post through, apparently it's just a "DOOM II themed arcade cabinet" housing a PC, and I'm not sure if the light gun is even functional.

I guess that would make this (more or less) a very specific PC case mod.

It's a Doom-themed MAME* cab, essentially. He mentions it does have a one Euro coin acceptor. It's definitely not a commercial machine, so I guess it's for novelty value at parties and such or something (IIRC Benheck did this). It's probably still technically illegal, but it's not like he's putting this thing in a store and charging customers for it.

*And other emulators. I don't like the term MAME cab personally.

It is odd that he hasn't demoed Doom on it, though. I'm actually working on a customized version of Doom for my MAME cab (not Doom themed), and I actually posted a picture of it back in August.

Customized Doom, eh? Have you altered the gameplay at all to be more arcade-like? Are you, perhaps, using Gooberman's "Doom The Arcade Game"?

I wasn't aware that anyone had attempted it before, actually.

Mostly it's aesthetic changes at this point- coloured lighting, new skyboxes, and occasional slopes, 3D floors, and polyobjects. Some layout changes and reordered episodes. New music, too. I've figured out how to do a lives/credits system and tested it in a basic proof-of-concept manner, but I haven't got around to making it nice and polished so it's disabled for the time being. I have some changes to weapons and enemies in mind, but I haven't made it to that point yet. The idea is to make it look like an arcade port made perhaps a few years later than the desktop version.

The long and short of it is that it was going pretty well until real life and other projects got in the way.

Was that shown in a 1997 film? It was a PC with a film prop inside...weird, but unusal.

No, this is not related to that one reference. This is an actual cabinet while all the movie had was a prop.

I was talking about Doom II. I thought an arcade version was never released.
