I think a "what could have been" earlier Strife would have looked like a less polished Strife 1.0 with some worse voice acting. A lot of the early Strife screenshots show mostly final graphics, so the style would've been the same, as with the similar graphical shading of certain sprites in Raptor (you know those difficulty faces would've fit easily in the Strife universe).

I agree that the game itself probably wouldn't have been drastically different but the reception might have been if it had been released at an earlier, and possibly more favourable, time.

Indeed the reception would be better in a less 3D-spoiled world. however since Quake had a bit of a press backlash for playing like Doom and looking brown in 1996 post-release there was a bit more respect for Build engine games at the time, so maybe Strife a month or two AFTER QUAKE could've been better as well. :P

However it only got worse for 2d games overall once the 3dfx Voodoo came out. Computer gaming was largely treated as a 'smoke em while you got them' for 3d hardware, and so 2D games or even really good ports of console/arcade 2D games are often lambasted for not being a game that uses Glide. It would be a terrible time in 1998-1999 to be a 2d game. Things relaxed in 2000 and later, with the abuse of the terms 'old school' and 'retro' instead. :|

BTW I don't subscribe to the whole 'betas are betta' thing because final releases are canonical. Ambitions are scaled down for a reason and original drafts of design documents never work out. also bugs are terrible terrible terrible things

There is also unofficial "1.07 patch", which already should have that OpenGL glitch fix included and it also adds support for widescreen resolutions, but I havent tried it yet.
Thanks for calling my attention to this. Tried it and it seems to work well for me.

Making a clean install to test it did remind me of the other problem with using a CD version, though; the Heretic II installer is a 16-bit app. I thought that there was an alternate installer around somewhere but I'm not finding it now.

You could probably use this.
