Ethril: Expect it to happen with new games.

After a huge internet shitstorm, Valve and Bethesda have pulled back for now. Hurray!

Good riddance. Shame on the modders who sold out, their true colours were so easily revealed because of this.

I wonder if it's all those negative reviews on their Skyrim store page prominently displayed made them change their mind.

I'd actually be okay with a button for donating to mods which takes a cut from each donation and gives it to the games devs. Kinda like a humble bundle sort of thing.

"They" being Steam? My mods aren't on Steam. They aren't even for Skyrim. I was talking about on here. =P

I still maintain the idea has merit but nothing about Beth/Zeni's and Valve's execution was good. Period. And I'm not confident in their 2nd try going too much better given that even Greenlight's debut didn't cause this much ruckus.

As for the modders, I'm torn between thinking effort should have a chance to be rewarded, giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming they didn't QUITE know what they were getting in to, and just figuring "Fuck it and fuck these guys" because when even the SkyUI guy hopped on board something was wrong---not to mention the poster boy of the paid mod experiment being that skeletal suit of armor that was badly patched together.

Something REALLY rubs me the wrong way about this whole debacle, even with the offending feature removed.

EDIT: Saw some posts on Reddit from one of the SkyUI devs. With personalities like that at the heart of this matter I'm no longer surprised everything went as wrong as it did.

FUCK THIS HOBBY.

I hope Epic do the same with UT4's modding.

I wouldn't say this was flawless at all :p

This did a lot of damage, I don't think it will ever be the same again now. The community hunted down and threw out the people who were charging for mods and now we have to deal with that. A lot of people were immature and childish as well and that will stick with us too.

@Xtyfe: Immature? Childish? On the internet? Never! :P

Nah, faecetiousness aside, you're right. The feature has been pulled (rightly so IMO), but it's legacy will remain. Without some form of official curation and support from the original publishers/devs, I cannot see how this could ever work.

But, you know, that probably won't stop other people from trying, eh?

Good that it was removed. There's just so damn much room for abuse everywhere.

I got no problem with that. :P

Now that I'm rich from selling Brutal Skyrim, I'm OK with mods being free again.
