The weapons are fine, the monsters have higher HP and pain resistance than Doom ones.

and there's the inventory system, too. the time bombs are great for thinning out crowds, the morph ovum turns dangerous enemies into harmless chickens, the quartz flasks are portable medikits and the tome of power is for when you can kill a lot of things fast. basically, Heretic's a bit more about the utility of the resources you have than the firepower of your weapons alone.

I replaced the mage's flechetts with trip mines and they are so much more use full and play into the mages "deal damage from a safe distance" thing.

The time bombs aren't really strong either, or their explosion radius is lower than I would expect. If perfectly positioned, it almost kills sabreclaws; it only takes 1-2 hits from the wand to finish them off.
