Crikey, that sounds a bit scary! Not much at the front to absorb damage, no seatbelts etc. The brakes are definitely very unforgiving. I had a brake line burst whilst going across a bridge - putting your foot on the pedal would make brake fluid piss out the side!Enjay wrote: Man, I miss my Beetle. I had a 1972 one and another one that was a little older but never roadworthy. Unfortunately, someone pulled out right in front of me when I was doing about 65mph and Beetle brakes being what they are...
For the most part I found them very easy cars to work on. However, for such an old car of the type that are usually fairly accessible, those spark plugs towards the front of the car are helluva difficult to get to and change. I even know people who have dropped the engine to change the plugs; claiming it is easier to do that than try and change them with the engine in place.
It was - and even more so than you might think.darbyjack wrote:Crikey, that sounds a bit scary!

They did as far as responsibility is concerned. However, value-wise, they initially took the line of "it's a really old car, it's only worth £200". Fortunately, I'd had all my MOT work etc done by a Beetle specialist and I asked him to write a letter to the insurers about the true value of my car. It was a good few years ago now but the initial offer of £200 suddenly became a few thousand.darbyjack wrote:I hope the insurers took your side.
Spoiler:I actually saw the car on the road a good few years later. So the insurers must have sold it on rather than scrapping it.
Haha nice one!Enjay wrote: Not bad for a car that I originally bought as a damaged repairable for (coincidentally) £200.
That's pretty awesome! Just out of curiosity I did a check online and looks like it hasn't been taxed since 2006 so who knows how its doing now.Enjay wrote: I actually saw the car on the road a good few years later. So the insurers must have sold it on rather than scrapping it.
