Been a while since I posted here.
I'm developing a mod for Doom, based off of DOOM. But what will set mine apart from the rest is that it'll aim to faithfully recreate the weapon behaviors, items, and upgrade systems that were used in DOOM.

Doom 4 or not, whatever your motivation, I think most can agree it's better than simply calling it DOOM. One might see the confusion there.

I think it's okay for New Doom to be its own thing, though. I don't see the point in just making it "more like Doom 2" considering the New stuff is what the game is balanced around.
