I still have that no bloat mindset. I originally planned to use OpenAL EFX hookups for all the case sounds but ended up hacking up my own echo/reverb effects.

though the samples i used were recorded from a very very noisy take and it's a miracle it sounds as good as it currently is. I haven't tried with cleaner drive samples

Tackling those larger floppy drives shouldn't be that far off... (pretty much the same mechanism, just bigger) and i'm thinking about the same for CDs (which should be easier, just two spin samples maybe, and perhaps the horrible fear-inducing noise of a still-spinning cd ejecting from the tray). I am uncertain if i'll do iomega zip drive sounds (as the nowadays-relatively-obscure zip drive is emulated)

I used to have a zip drive on one of my first PCs. It didn't get much use but it was pretty amazing that something of such high capacity was available at the time.

Freeeeeakin' hell that startup screen brings back a lot of memories. Wonderful times with dear Windows... Older windows like 95, 98 and 2000. Definitely cannot forget 2000.

Also that shmup game! Used to play that often with mame emulator, like a spoiled child.

Looks and sounds amazing, but I think the keyboard sound coming through the speakers would drive me insane after a while. :lol:

I had an LS120 drive on a couple of machines. IMO they were much better because they were much more flexible: they took their own (amazing capacity :lol: ) 120MB disks but also supported standard 3.5" floppies. So you could have one of them as your floppy drive instead of needing a second drive for high capacity disks. I suspect that they weren't quite as popular as zip drives because they came out a bit later (I think) and technology was already beginning to move on by that stage too. CDs were much higher capacity, cheaper to produce, had fewer moving parts than a disk in a case parts and much easier for companies to use as distribution media.

I never understood why Minidiscs never became useful as high capacity software discs though. They had roughly the same capacity as CDs but were re-writable by design and had much more flexible features (certainly as far as storing music was concerned). Probably just too late again, or maybe the fact that they were much more closely tied to one company (Sony).

They were the data storage medium of choice in Demolition Man and The Matrix. Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger in Last Action Hero uses them to store all his classic rock songs. And their data compression was really really easy to work with. The problem was that no one wanted to switch from cassettes, the original prices were pretty extortionate, and then MP3 turned up with all of it's modern marketing. The end. A shame.

So I haven't touched whatever I was making before in like a year, but this week decided to make a quick model in blender to see if I still remember how to do it and import it into zdoom.

Quick texture via blender texture paint, made the model look stoned.

Made another one yesterday and tried texture painting in blender with some brush smoothing, but didn't like it as it doesn't fit the theme of flat shaded. Reminds me of HL1 skins.

Nash you are on a different level with the modding, very impressive just looked at some of your videos. What is your plan, a commercial title?

Yes, commercial. The game will be a small-sized open world RPG inspired by Fallout 1. :) Speaking in technical terms, think... Strife, but with a more "go almost anywhere, do any quest in any order" approach to game design.

(Open world does not have to equal infinite draw distance. The test level I have in that video feels massive already and it's well within the Doom level limits, with plenty of room to spare (I can copy and paste the same level 4 - 5 times more before I run out of space))
