Has anyone like James Paddock ever relase trance midis?
Has anyone like James Paddock ever relase trance midis?
I know several of our prolific authors have made some but I'm struggling to think of any maps that have used them. I'm learning basic music composition and would really like to see one in an editor as they must be more complex than a regular song.

(lame joke confusing the music genre and my username to be added later)

Based on the things that I know about music production, I don't imagine trance is very conducive to MIDI or even traditional music composition. A lot of electronic music artists use loops and mixers, and not necessarily tools that work with the MIDI file format.

The General MIDI instrument set is somewhat lacking in interesting synth instruments. I expect it could be done with Roland GS, between its expanded instruments and effect controllers. But of course, that raises the problem of tying it to specific hardware/software, and by that point you might as well be rendering it to audio anyway.

Must we limit ourselves to MIDI? That format is too limiting, and you can feel the improvement in quality when you play a Doom map with music better than MIDI.

There's a fine line between small size and too big to download. I myself am on a 10GB-data limit connection during the day. I can't afford to download a WAD/PK3 with 300mb of OGG/MP3s in it. Though I think a good alternative to MIDI in this case and instance will be a MOD Tracker. Much like what Unreal/Unreal Tournament uses. They come out around 500kb for a song.

Yep, modtrackers seem to be the most sensible choice.
This one is an example:

Although a custom soundfont with several midis is still smaller than several mods. Each mod file needs to contain the samples it uses, which means if multiple mods use the same instrument you'll have duplicate samples of that instrument. A custom soundfont also means you can provide low and high quality versions by providing a different soundfont with low or high quality samples, and not have to touch the songs themselves.
