While I learned how to make origami as a kid, I didn't learn more until recent years.
Online, I've seen multi-sheet projects, wet paper models, 3D ones, and so forth, but for
me, there's something special about just one simple sheet of paper and two hands.
Below are links to models that are fairly easy. I've tried to stick mostly to videos,
as I often find traditional instructions hard to follow.
Requirements:
Square paper
Any size is OK, but standard 5 7/8" X 5 7/8" works best with most models. If you do not
have or do not want to buy such paper, you can fold and tear/cut a standard sheet of 8.5" X
11" paper.
Standard rectangular paper
Sticky notes or other such small square paper
Marker or Pen
For eyes and other accents.
Scissors
Only for simple cuts, so no worries!
Googly eyes & tape/glue! (optional)
Makes things cute and funny!
1) Origami spaceship
Very easy to make! Looks great, but doesn't fly.
I learned this one way back in 6th grade, and I'm sure the model is much older than that!
The best part is that it uses normal 8.5" x 11" paper!

2) The flapping bird
Always a hit with kids and grownups alike!
The way I make the "bird base" is different from most videos, but that other way seems to
align the paper better. This video also shows how to make a square sheet from a rectangular sheet.

3) Dragon
There are so many dragon models out there, but this one is easy enough. I like to fold the
shoulders down to make it look even better!

4) Dragonfly
There's a fold or two I have trouble with, but it still ends up looking neat!

5) Sticky note butterfly
Quick, but pretty! Uses the "water bomb" base.

6) Puppy

7) Sea turtle

8) Dolphin
This particular model can be easily made to look like Winter. Carefully tear off the top layer of the tail, and voila!

If you take a bus to work or school, you can get a tablet sleeve from some stores like
Dollar Tree that will easily hold all of the paper and tools you'll need. If you place a
piece or two of cardboard in there as well, it becomes easy to use the sleeve as a flat
surface for folding.
Use children's safety scissors! But NOT on a bus!
For the DS, there is Minagara Oreru DS Origami. It contains many simple models. I
personally suggest the puppy! The crab is funny with the googly eyes!
There's a frog and rabbit I'd like to share, but I can't seem to find them online! I'll
have to look for my old origami book.
Origami paper can be easily found at art and craft stores, though I find Amazon to be
cheaper. I prefer the Aitoh brand, as it's just the right thickness and quality for lower
level models. Dollar Tree has sticky notes and just plain small squares for cheap!
There's even foil paper that's just a little long but makes for great spaceships!

Re: The Origami Topic!
I used to know the crane so well, I could make one from a 1in square. (Requires thin paper like copier stock, or a chewing gum wrapper for extra shiny.) Toothpicks and/or tweezers are necessary for the later folds.
I should pick that up again. It's an entirely useless skill for me, but I have plenty of those already.

That dragonfly looks pretty neat!!! I kinda like dragonflies and damselflies, so it's pretty nice to see you can churn out something like this out of paper
Can you make a frog as well? I remember when I was much younger, I could, and it could even hop if its butt was pressed down, but I forgot the whole thing...ahh, the good ol'days...

I remember those. The trick was to use a heavier paper so the "spring" would have more power.Reactor wrote:Can you make a frog as well? I remember when I was much younger, I could, and it could even hop if its butt was pressed down, but I forgot the whole thing...

Oh I love origami, I always have.
Re: The Origami Topic!
I tried to assemble one today using a tutorial...well, it looked like a frog...sorta...but I couldn't get it to hop anymore.NeuralStunner wrote:I remember those. The trick was to use a heavier paper so the "spring" would have more power.
Damn it, I'm getting old and useless
Re: The Origami Topic!
Make the model a few times, wait a day, try again from memory, rinse and repeat. Over time, you'll learn the quirks of the paper, the model, and your own hands and brain. Pretty neat stuff!
