* The first lump in the map's WAD directory must be the map label. Why not derive that from the folder name in the zip? That way if you want to change the level the map is for you only need to change the folder name in the ZIP eg: mycoolmod.zip mycoolmod.zip/map.e1m1 mycoolmod.zip/map.e1m1 ...

I'm not trying to sell it to anyone. I was asked to explain the design and I did.

As for map editors supporting it - thats up to them. I've sent a mail to CodeImp about ZIP support but he never got back to me... :(

I might have to do it myself.

What I still can't understand is why you look at 12 files in a ZIP in a totally different way to 12 lumps in a WAD. Why should users care anyway? It's not like this affects them (your opinion Graf). As a developer Graf, if you don't care about this then WHY are you trying so hard to convince me that ...

Tell me one editor that can handle maps that are not packaged in a WAD? So, no matter how you twist it this isn't true. I'm not twisting it in any way. Trying to hide the complexity by telling users something different IS Graf. Don't try to pull me up on this when in reality I'm telling it like it ...

Isn't that basically the same as: Yes because in your map editor you could save to ZIP/folder instead of save to WAD (though it really doesn't matter). In the case of map data you'd be best to simply regard this as an academic concern that is of no importance. You wouldn't need to then copy the ...

I generally agree with everything you mention here - but where do separate level lumps come into play here? They don't in this particular example. The seperate level lumps we just carried over from the WAD design into the ZIP design. We didn't set out thinking "I know what would be useful ...

Well, the fact is that I'm not suggesting anything new here. Doomsday implemented this a couple of versions ago. Let me just exemplify the main issue I have with using WAD as a container. Texture artist working on resources: With WAD Opens texture in Photoshop, makes changes and saves to file. Opens ...

So basically, a "lump assembly" is just another name for a directory tree? And Doomsday uses a single digit extension of the directory name to specify a prefix length for all the contents of that directory? The prefix is stripped from the filenames when you read the directory, but it is still used ...

Sigh. Bouncy - there would be 12 seperate files with my ZIP only design as there would be 12 seperate files with the existing WAD in ZIP design. Don't let Graf's self-benefiting example cloud the issue. MyMod.ZIP MyMod.ZIP/e1m1.zip MyMod.ZIP/e1m1.zip/e1m1.lmp MyMod.ZIP/e1m1.zip/things.lmp MyMod.ZIP ...

Why do you have this insane desire to treat a map as 12 files? Just because it happens to be made out of 12 lumps in a WAD? I really don't see the issue. I take those 12 lumps and put them in ZIP and I have one entity. I take the same 12 lumps and put them in a WAD and I have one entity. I'm not ...

If you have the map as 12 lumps you can't extract it with WinZip because you'd just have 12 files, each one useless by itself. Well, if I do the same with XWE and a WAD I'm left in the same situation so what is your point? And since you essentially need the levels in WAD format to do anything with ...

Worse, to extract maps that are split into separate files inside a Zip cannot be extracted without using specialized tools that know about it therefore efficiently defeating one of the main attractions of using Zips. I don't know what you are referring to by specialized tools (WinZip?). Why not ...

Ok I give up. I have explained this concept enough times now and you simply don't get it at all. You are constantly comparing apples with oranges (a WAD file verses a collection of lumps instead of WAD vs ZIP). This change is something our users have requested and I can see why it would be a lot ...

Yes you have missed something in my argument but since I have explained this on numerous occasions and I don't seem to be getting anywhere I'll just not bother. We are not doing this so that the lumps can be manipulated seperately and independantly. Just so that everyone is clear - map data is ...
