I kinda like some of your suggestions. Something that tripped me up for a while was Set Video Mode, as I had never heard screen resolutions referred to like that before.

Back on topic, I'd like to echo the sentiments from earlier that the menu makes it really tough to figure out what to change (I know of at least one person who stuck to 2.8.1 specifically because it took too much fiddling to try and get the classic look back). So MAP02 was really dark for me, but I thought it was on purpose because it was night and because Rumia. Going into the files and creating a CUBEN0 appropriate file seems to fix it, I haven't tested too much. But I see nothing ...
