Tool support in general is rather poor, and unlike PNG this requires a rather bulky library to be included. I don't think the format supports custom chunks.

Does it handle custom chunks? Sprites need to have offset information.

Is it supported by the most popular editors? Meaning SLADE 3, GZDB-BF, and DBX.

For me lossless WebP gives 1.5 to 2 times better compression than PNG, and AFAIK this number is the same for lossy WebP vs JPG.
Yes, i like my wads to be as small as possible.
