Borders are now OK. Didn't post here initially, I was confused by missing visible part of portals.

Also apparently in 2.8 release the projection is a bit broken as well:

Although there it's only noticeable by looking up/down.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is yet another manifestation of the countless floating point related problems that are yet to be sorted out.

The particles are supposed to make a smooth border around the portal. They are somehow rounded instead.
