Because it's something that can be easily done on the mod side.

Can I ask why not? If there are already 2 options for sound why not a 3rd?

a SNDINFO lump redirecting all the songs to the same empty music would be enough to silence it.

I don't see that getting in, so you could make yourself a little autoload mod which contains an empty, silent audio lump duplicated for each name of the standard map song name (D_E1M1, D_E1M2, etc. for Ultimate Doom; D_RUNNIN, D_STALKS, etc. for Doom II/Final Doom). It'd work in 95% of the cases.

Sometimes I tire of hearing the same Doom tracks and choose to play with -nomusic. The problem is that when a map finishes the intermission screens just feel a little dead.

Would it be possible to have 3 options (-nosound, -nomusic & -nomapmusic)?

It would be nice to play a map with only the ambient sounds and then be 'rewarded' with intermission music. :)
